I would be a little worried why he is selling it so soon.
Go take it to a shop and have a pre-purchase inspection done, it may save you a fortune.

I'm kind of new at this land rover stuff but I would have to say it doesnt matter where you live 13k for a 100000 mile 04 SE is way over priced. I just ran a NADA search using a MD zip code and the DEALER RETAIL is $10,000, trade-in is $5000. I would say that truck is about $5-6000 over priced. JMHO

I appreciate everyone's input.
The ticking will drive you insane, but not necessarily kill the engine.
The oil pumps usually fail randomly. The 2003/2004 models have a bad rep for oil pumps going bad. If the oil pressure light comes on at any time during the test drive then stay away.
Most expensive repairs relate to the engine: head gasket job or replacing a bad engine.

How much does a head gasket job cost?

How much does getting a new oil pump cost?

I paid $7k with records for 04' SE with 100k on truck 48 on new motor replaced by LR. I'm in Phoenix AZ so the truck had zero rust or other weather related issues. One or two minor nicks in the paint, but interior was perfect. Given my expeierence I'd say $6-8k is dead on for price.

just bought my 04 w 92,000 on it for 8,000 and it was perfect, the head gasket was done at 75,000 by the dealer. I have had to replace the plugs and wires so far but other than that she has been great, and I love mine.

Maryland, you are in the land of milk and honey. Two major LR dealerships, two of the wealthiest counties in the country, everything is overpriced, everyone has a LR, Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, etc... and everything around here sells for a premium. Best bet is to scour the sticks in Virginia for a deal. Food for thought when buying a used car in Maryland from anyone other than the dealer. Cars here only get inspected when the are sold or change hands with someone who is not a family member. We have no yearly inspection so people will drive their cars into the ground here. You are not taking it in every year and having someone tell you your engine is leaking like a busted oil tanker, your brakes are metal on metal, your driveshaft is ready to fall out, etc... just FYI. You can really buy a load in Maryland, who ironically has one of the toughest inspections in the states. I.e. you may buy a load and then have a 30 day temp tag to last you while you restore it to like new condition just to get it inspected. ;-)

At least at the dealer they have it inspected before they can sell it. Is that inspection a legit one, who knows.
