2004 Discovery and Good Year Tire Wear
 

I am the owner of a 2004 Land Rover Discovery II SE. It has been well maintained since my original acquisition. I purchased Good Year Tires in 2008 at 85,000 and my Rover is now at 127,000. Over the last several months various tires have lost air suddenly and the diagnosis was build up on the seal causing air loss. Notwithstanding balancing and pressure adjustments, I still notice an uneven ride of the wheels at speeds above 45 MPH. And the tires continue to loose air. I had better luck with Michelins and I am thinking of changing the tires notwithstanding that they still have sufficient tread on them. Is it me or are these tires known for some kind of warping, cracking--wearing poorly causing the uneven ride, loss of air - you definitely feel this through the steering column? P.S. this is my second Rover. I was persuaded to buy Good Year notwithstanding a similar bad experience with my Series I.

What Goodyear tires are they?

I believe they are the Fortera or the Forenzas?

I have Goodyear Duratracs and love them. Its a lot of tire. But low noise on the highway and excellent snow and wet traction. I have never had problems with uneven wear. I rotate them myself every 5000 miles.
I would look at worn bushings on your ball joints. If they are original at 127k they are shot and beyond there service life. Lift each front wheel up on a jack stand. have a friend wiggle it side to side. Put your hands on the ball joints. If you feel play, there is your problem.

4 years and 42,000 miles is a pretty good run on tires. all tires wear out. i rarely go more than 2 years on a set just because i start noticing problems with them. that, and i put TONS of miles on my cars.
i think you've got your run out of them and are due for a new set.

Get rid of what ever tire you are running, they are not safe based on what you describe.
Do you have 16 or 18" wheels, what sort of driving do you do?

Thanks for all the good and helpful thoughts. Got the ball joints covered. Dealer did them 500 miles ago. The Rover has remained in maintenance with dealer since purchase, always proactive on services, never waited. Rover is on second engine.

If you were to look at these tires you see what appears to be cracks all around the outside edges of the tread.

My Rover mainly experiences highway and local road driving conditions.

I am leaning toward getting a new set, not but I am afraid not Good Year.

First, as a retired service manager, I need to pop your bubble/thoughts about dealer service, it is some of the worst you will find.
Your tires are weather checked.
Again what size tires are you running?
