245/75-16 On Stock Disco II?
It's time for new tires. I'd like soemthing a little taller than stock but won't be lifting at this time. I may eventually go with heavy duty Land Rover springs when I finally upgrade the suspension, but that won't be for awhile.
My question is, will 245/75-16 tires fit OK on my stock truck? It's a 1999 Discovery II. Thanks! |
They will work well with little or no rubbing.
Don't go to Rover coils, they are expensive and not that good. Consider a good OME lift when you get ready. |
Thanks, Disco Mike. Would the 2" OME kit look OK with the 245/75 - 16s?
|
Yes. If you are not doing any heavy wheeling the OME medium duty lift would be great and the tires would look fine.
|
Just so you know, I put 245/75/16 Goodyear Wrangler Authority A/T on my 00' D2 and did some wheeling and they seem fine. I am in your boat and can't do a lift yet but wanted tires. I don't believe I fully articulated the suspension but HAD to be close and there was no rub. Hope this helps!

I looked very seriously at the Authority, which can only be found at Walmart, and it is an awsome tire.
|
Yes, the price was fair and so far the tire is great. Low road noise and good grip for being an A/T. I did a lot of looking into the TreadWright's but have noticed their tire prices went up about $20 a tire....add the shipping and it wasn't too much less than the price of the Goodyear's from Walmart.

I rand 245/74's on my truck when stock. Much easier to find decent tires at a reasonable price as opposed to the stock size.

Falken 245/75/16
Anyone try this yet? I am thinking about putting on a 2002 Disco II...?

I got the tires from Walmart and there are some reviews on their site about them, most were good (didn't read them all). I didn't really do a ton of research on them before I made my purchase, I just knew the price was right on the money and tire looked good.
I love them from what I have done. I don't off road a ton but they have awesome traction overall. We got some snow around Halloween here in MD and they performed great. If money is no concern, I'm sure there is a better tire BUT price was right and they do their job well. I would recommend them !! |
I have a set of the authoritys on my montero for about two years now. I have put 43K miles on them and I am still just shy of 50% tread. I use them off road in mud, clay, sand, snow and I drive daily on road. I did get a puncture but I blame myself for that. I got in a situation where I had to plow threw a mud hole with about 2" of ice on it. the ice was right about in the middle of the tire so I kind of expected it. I have never needed to air down even once. I will continue to buy these tires as long as they are available. and walmarts lifetime replacemnt and rotation plan is pritty cheap they patch my tire and they rotated my tires with out a groan or question.

It's honestly hard to gauge a tread by a %. Obviously you're referring to the difference between completely bald and brand new, but doesn't it make sense to use the lowest tread you'd use to new? Like my BFG KM2s, they were at around 25% from new, but I wouldn't use them again. So shouldn't that be 0%?

I have those tires on my truck now, and they are brilliant. At least for everything I use them for (Deep mud, snow, mud, rocks, mud), I wasnt sure when I first got them, but so far I haven't gotten stuck because of them. When I first got them, I didn't have a lift, and they rubbed, but only when I was fully flexing. A couple days later I bought a 2 inch OEM lift and didn't have any problems after that. Now I am at 4.5 inches and now I definitely don't have any rubbing issues:D

Hey guys, I have a 2001 Disco 2, with stock 16s on it. I have been searching the web for other tires sizes and to really answer the question of, can I use other tire sizes for the stock 16inch? Can I use 245/75 16? I have a non lifted Disco with Medium Coils.

If you are doing light off-roading and nothing crazy you should be perfectly fine. I will put out a more detailed update later today when I have some more time. I came across an interesting issue with running this tire or the fact that I potentially was driving the truck like a moron lol. I will post more a little bit today with my only concern with running the 245 75 16 on a non lifted d2. |
You might rub the radius arm when making a tight right turn. Otherwise you shouldn't have any problems. Your speedometer will not read correctly. You'll will need to adjust your speed down by about 10% to stay within the posted speed limits. As far as I know there is no way to recalibrate the speedometer for the new tire size.

A few side notes on this topic:
I'm about to buy the same tire size, probably Michelin since I've gotten 90k out of my current set... With my current stock size tires my speedometer is already off by 5-7mph at 65/70 mph. I'm wondering which way they will swing when I increase the tire size. Maybe it will be correct!! At least with an Ultragauge I will know. And FWIW RE the first few posts... I'm running an OME medium set of springs and NC Sport shocks... Two years in and it is starting to ride a bit more comfortably. Keep this in mind if you expect comfort out of your Rover. |
When you mount a larger tire, your indicated speed will be slower that you are actually going. For me, the difference was that at 30 MPH indicated, I was going 33, at 70 MPH indicated, I was going 77. Doing 33 in a 30 zone probably won't get you a ticket, but going 77 in a 70 or 82.5 in a 75 zone just might, especially if you already have an error in that direction.
|
I have the error in the other direction with my stock size tires. When my speedo says I'm going 70mph the UG says I'm actually going 62.
|
Where do you guys find your tires? Should Treadwright tires be considered?
|
I have Treadwright tyres for winter. Took them highway last year. All good.
