33" tire and gear swaps
So I really want to go with 33" tires but not sure what the gear swap thing is. Is this something I can do and if not what does it cost usually? I have rebuilt pretty much everything but havent messed with gears.

411 gears

Call Bill at Great Basin Rovers. in Utah. He will get you sorted out. You are looking at somewhere win the range of 3800.00 for both front and rear diffs with 4:11 gears and lockers. but then you will be advised to upgrade to heavy duty axles at least in the back. plus the costs of replacing everything.

It's a slippery slope I tell you...
gears- $350 per diff lockers(recommended) $900-$1100 per axle having them built - $100-300 per axle rear HD shafts - $450-500ish front HD shafts - $900ish There are many different ratios of gears available, as well as brands. Ashcroft, GBR, and KAM all have gearing sets available. Lockers range from low price - trutrac(not a real locker) $500 or so, detroit(more of a locker, but not selectable and don't install it in the front if you can avoid it), to Ashcroft and ARB air lockers. I believe TJM also makes an air locker, while KAM makes an e-locker. Then if you plan on air lockers, an air compressor is a couple hundred. You can install the diffs and air compressor easily, building the diff takes a bit of actual skill and experience. |
gears + trutrac in front
gears + detroit in rear.......................low 2ks then detroit requires axle upgrade to hd, so mo $ because busted axle = ruined locker trutrac and gears both ends........................closer to 2K not necessary to go hd axles, but not a bad idea i thought you were running 33" already. what size will you be getting out of? |
stuff
Weeellllll, nevermind on that! Didnt realize the prices. Guess ill stick to the 31" tires. Thanks for the info.

Not saying you'll DEFINITELY break something, I ran the 5 day vermont overland trophy with stock gearing, axles, and diffs on 33s. But I've also snapped a diff on 31s.

Yeah, for sure you can stick 33s with stock stuff. It will be a small low end power loss, but you won't just start snapping stuff...... You can do that with what you've got now. I've seen were some people say they do not mind stock 3.54 gearing and 33's.

I know this is a slightly older post but, I run 33s on stock gears and it doesn't bother me at all. Then again l, it's a LR and not a sports car so... Def a small low end loss and slight mpg loss as well. PO cut the bejesus outta the fenders to make them for since they're so large and wide there was too much body contact on full compression On The trails. Now I need to find decent flares or piping to cover the IDGAF cuts
