96 DISCO engine light problem
 

recently in my 96 DISCO engine light came on..so i took it to autozone for a free diagnostic test and the obd 2 gave me
this code P1496- it said emmission control>>>>>EVAP system gross leak detected <<<<<<<<

does anybody had this problem>>>????and what do i have to do>>>how much will it cost me>>big or small solution.???

What this means is your gas tank is venting fumes.
It could be the gas cap is not on tight or one of many hoses
from the gas tank is loose.


My code book shows that code as ( ELC system 1 fault ).
I could not find what ELC stood for.

Do you have Pre Advanced Evaps system or Advanced Evaps system?

my disco was in a car accident last year on the fuel tank side excatly...maybe this might have caused the problem and sometimes i do smell fuel when i take a turn....

today i was filling up dico and notice that fuel was leaking out this had never happend before.from inside.

i don't know what pre advance evaps sys i have....how do i chk

i have a 96 Disco i belive is the standard model

If you are smelling a strong gas smell from your Rover you might want to check to see if you see any visable leaks on the ground, I know that you didn't mention any but it might be a good idea to see what might be going on. If your Rover was hit on the fill side in the Accident, and they did any repairs, you might want to check the hose clamp that tooks to the tank, it might have came loose and is venting out gas when you turn, or while filling up. My guess is that just maybe if there was any repairs and they happened to remove something from under the tank area, maybe someone forgot to tighten the clamps, I could be wrong but it might be something to check.

There is a recall on gas tanks.
My 96's tank was just replaced last year.
Call a dealer, have your Vin number ready you could get lucky.

i called the dealer but it was no use cuz my disco has a salvage title....and they put the vin # in and said they have no recalls on it..by the way my disco is not 96 it's a 97/

This is a you need to know. some disco have a recall out on the gas tank. one of the plastic welds is weak and can leak and cause the light problem, and maybe one worse. fire. check to see if you vehicle is one of the recall vehicles. gotta love a rover. duboff

i had a mechanic look at the problem. well the he took out the rear wheel where the gas tank is located and look under to see any visable problem he saw that a wire is broken off and we have one problem we can't get to that area to fix the problem...i don't know what the wire surpose is but it's kind of hard to explain ill up pics and if sum one knows aobut this please help me out.thanks.

the pix location are from under the gas tank area ???? i was wondering what those wires are for which are broken>??? and how i can fix the problem...i believe this is what is causing the engine light to fix..
