97-2001 Discoveries?
 

Hi, I've been without a license for 5 years now. I have seven dogs and could/would do alot off traveling due to offroad, camping, horticulture and photography. I really want a Discovery. However...everyone around me warns me that they are the worst cars to own...and yes... some of them own them. How true is this? I only have a month to wait and am trying to make an educated decision....just don't know what I would replace my dream of a Discovery with. Please give me hope :) Steve

Rovers can be a litle touchy at times, but there are more good Disco's pulling stuck 4X4's out of trouble the visa versa.

First thing to think about is buying the newest model you can afford, preferably one that is still under warranty. This will allow you time to become familiar with the "pecularities" of the brand, and the routine required to maintain your truck properly while being somewhat financially protected. The typical dealership will be a costly resource if you do not learn to perform most maintenance and repairs yourself, not to mention the are far fewer Land Rover service centers than say Toyota has to offer. I have owned several other 4x4 brands, some of which were far less demanding to own and operate than my Discovery, but none offered the same level of performance and "character". Like with any other used vehicle, you should inspect and test any potential purchase thoroughly before taking the plunge.

They're great but you have to keep in mind that (no offense) it's (until recently) an English made vehicle. They've got style and are incredibly resourceful but need to be taken care of. my other vehicle is a '74 Super Beetle so I'm used to listening to my vehicles. Rover's can be a little bit expensive expecially if your like me. I proactively replace things because I HAVEN'T owned mine since new. But I love it, especially when I go on trails with my soon to be brother-in-law in his lifted Tahoe. My stock '03 disco (without locking diffs) is much more capable than his.

I also don't consider myself an owner as a steward. I don't have kids but hope to have my Disco be my fun vehicle for the next 30-40 years. Not much rust here in Texas so, well have to see.
