Default 97 Disc. engine power problem

My discovery has had this problem throughout its life, but has gotten worse as of late. While driving, the engine seems to lose power for a second and then come back up to speed. This would happen every few seconds for about a half a minute. It used to do this only at highway speed once a month. Now its been happening at slower speeds(30 mph) every other drive. It only has 72,000 miles on it and we have been very good about keeping up with the scheduled services. The dealership was informed of this problem(of course never happened during their drives) and they replaced computer chips, etc. but nothing helped. Has anyone experienced this problem? Thank You

I used to have the same problem with my '97 Disco at around the same mileage. It was always a very bad sinking feeling in my stomach when it happened because it often happened while accelerating, or climbing steep grades such as a mountain pass. It was as if the engine went into a mild convulsion... just sort of stuttered. I'd let off on the gas, gas it again, coast a bit, then the problem would self correct. The techs were stumped because no engine fault occurred. What they ended up doing, and which seemed to fix it, was to replace a corroded cable coming off the battery. I'm not a mechanic, so I can't be more specific, and I've since traded the vehicle in. The problem was electrical. Good luck!

I think I've been having a similar problem. Mine tends to have a lil "brain fart" when going up inclines or really getting on the accelarator. So far I'm thinkin like teamyonex. It seems to help every time I coat the battery connectors and posts with petroleum jelly. So I figure I have a weak connection somewhere. For those who don't know petroleum jelly can fix a lot of little things on your car(door squeaks etc...) I was going to replace my cables but was scared to just get what they had at the autozone without asking first! any recomendations?

My problem too. the solution was a speed sensor on the top of the transmission. it wears out gradually, and it will not show up on diagnostics. The sensor is 100-150 to replace, and for me problem gone. The other thing that you may want to look at are the 4 main grounding points. The direction of where to check are on the rovers north site. In the tech question section. they also sell the part. they are not the only one. give it a try it might solve the problem. hope it helps. gotta love a rover. duboff.

Do a search. Classic symptoms of a bad VSS.
