'97 Disco Power Seat Switch Broke?

My '97 Disco power seat switches have stopped moving backwards on both sides. They move in all directions except backwards. The driver's power switch stopped first, so I swapped it with the passenger switch for just a little while, and now it no longer moves back. The problem is my wife and I share this vehicle, so she moves the seat all the up, and now it's stuck, therefore, I can not drive it.

First of all, is there a way to hot wire the seat motor and bypass the switch?
Second of all, does this sound like the switches have gone bad? If so, where can I get switches some what cheap?
I did take the driver's switch apart and cleaned it very well, but there was no improvement.

Thanks so much,

Bryan

No you cannot hot wire the seat.
The more you use the switch the faster the switch will wear out.

RE: '97 Disco Power Seat Switch Broke?

It is possible to open up your switch and repair it. I found out that the reason they quit working is because carbon builds up on the contacts inside from arcing when the switch is used. Open up the switch, clean the contacts really good and put it back together. Be careful and open the case slowly as there are a bunch of springs and ball bearings that like to go flying if you open it too quickly.

I actually did a write up on the process of fixing the switch if you can find it with the search function. I tried t find it and failed. Sorry.

I found this useful when repairing the switches. A few additional tips are; checking the connections with a volt/ohm meter prior to placing top plate, and I had problems with the top ball bearings falling off when reassembling: solution= small dab of conductive grease or bulb grease applied to the top of spring, although conductivity is not necessary.
