Alternator alternatives

Ladies and Gents
My 2000 D2 Alt just went bad and I was able to limp home on the battery. Tranny wouldn't shift, all dash warning lights blinking at me, even the shifter indicator. Almost dark and I left my headlights off. All of this in Denver after our 1 foot of snow. What a great vehicle. Alternators go out. So i am not pissed or dissapointed.
My Questions. Can I rebuild my alternator?(are there kits available for that purpose?
Autozone has them for $250 and a local land rover shop has them for $400, OUCH.
I have a local salvage yard that has two landrovers with engines so I know they have alts on them. I know it is a chance but we just finished with all of our shopping and a christmas present to Landy was not in the budget.
Last question. Is there another alt that would fit that is better or as good as the unit on there. I know this isn't a chevy and I can take parts off of newer cars and fit them to my 70 camaro but I havent heard of such things for land rover. Thanks guys. My immediate plan is the salvage yard piece. Maybe I will get both.

1. Salvage yard alternator good idea, they usually go fast. About $30 at yards near me.

2. See if you have an indy alternator and starter shop in town. My local one rebuilds the alternator if just brushes and regulator for under $100 (and the shop forman drives an old Rangie, always a good sign). More if you need bearings or stator.

3. Auto parts stores get them from high volume rebuilders, run by savage bean counters that can't see past the end of their calculator. They buy the cheapest parts from places with poor quality control (like China), the result is that your alternator keeps failing, and you have to go through warranty exchange multiple times.

4. See this thread on another board with various Bosch part numbers http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=64631

5. Car Parts Warehouse sells them reman for $171

6. Amazon sells them "new" for $195, but the Bosch # AL080&N may be a number for the rebuilt ones.

Just because there are engines does not mean the alts are still there.
If money is tight and you cant get a used one then buy a rebuilt.
The DII uses a Bosch alt, so I think the rebuild are better quality than the DI's because they are used by many vehicles, I just dont know which ones will cross reference to the DII.

Salvage

That was one of the answers I was looking for. D1 vs D2 alts. Yes mine is a Bosch. The other idea was to take it to a rebuild place. I will see if Denver has one. I lucked out with Denver having a steering box rebuild place. I cleaned the battery connection and it actually started to work again but stopped working in about 5 minutes. I was happy for 5 minutes. The battery wasn't that bad but you start with what is cheapest.
OK, Ill remove tomorrow and have tested to make sure it is bad and then to the salvage yard unless I find a rebuild place.
thanks for the replies.

D1 and D2 alt don't swap. Also on D2 alt, check fuse 27 inside ("exicter") and fuse link 1 under hood, before removal. Bosch numbers are AL0807N or 0-123-510-073, appear to be Rover specific (no cross to other things).

Why would you want to completely change out your alternator to another design/model, just because it failed, what happens when your engine goes???
You have a few good/better options,
Buy a rebuild kit and follow the directions
Find a local auto/electric shop that rebuilds starters and alternators
Or go to British Parts of Utah where they sell brand new Bosch alternators for around $260
If you want, you can, by using a good alternator shop, rebuild your's and boost the total amps close to 200 amps, there is a guy here in Northern Colorado who only charges $50 over the normal rebuild cost and you come out with one hot alternator.

alternator generator rebuild

OK. I took my ALt to

They totally rebuild it. New bearings, brushes and what ever else is in a BOSCH alternator. I use to just replace brushes back in the day and that was it. They look like a good quality shop. Clean and professional. They are located over by SAPP brothers truck stop. Quebec/270 area.
Cost will be around $280 and I dont mind that being they are a shop that only rebuils for customers and not worried about number of units. So I will update Monday when I get it. Christmas weekend wasn't the best time for it to go bad. Well, Merry Christmas to all, God bless.

EDIT: Just got a call from A1 and they quoted my cost at over $500 dollars for the rebuild!!!!!! Yes I was shocked and the guy at the other end sensed that shock. when they quoted me the price they mistakenly gave me wholesale price not retail. So they will honor the $280 but I doubt an individual like us land rover owners will get that again. Thats a hell of a mark up to say the least(in my eyes anyways). I guess if keeping your original Alternator is that important but i think I caould have gotten a new one for $500 or so. So there you go.
