Alternator "whine"
 

Hey friends--

took my disco mudding a couple of weekends ago and had to hose down the engine compartment--probably used a little more pressure than i should have, because the next morning, the engine idle seemed a bit more strained (maybe only 500 rpms more) BUT- what was more noticeable, was the alternator had a whine to it---most likely the bearings i guess.

took it to get it tested and its reading 13.89 no load & 13.67 loaded...Are these ranges acceptable? I know I'll probably have to replace it very soon, but I welcome any comments or suggestions.

What year? How many miles?

DII's are pretty water friendly, so unless you were just dowsing the alt and fusebox from all angles, I doubt it was the bath.

I believe once you get below 13.6A, you start running into trouble, M+S lights, limb mode, etc,...

BTW - "Mudding" is illegal most places:p

Did i say mudding??? I meant lightly traversing a moist field HAHAHA! (private property)

Hopefully someone with some real knowledge will chime in about the whine. I have a slight whine on mine as well (2002 with 129K) but have just ignored it as a normal Rover engine sound as everything charges and runs fine.

p.s. - I grew up in Tampa, near the Westshore Mall, still have family in and around Clearwater. Love it down there!

Mine was whining pretty bad. I replaced the bearings in the alternator and voila no more whine...any auto electric supplier should be able to get the bearings. Cost me $60.

You need a new alt, no big deal.
You can confirm this by removing the belt and starting the engine, is the noise gone?
Shut the engine off and then spin the alt pulley by hand, is the noise there?
