Anyone in DC Metro area with Hawkeye for DII 4.6?

After doing DiscoMike's 60k mile service list and rebuilding the front driveshaft with ToddCo goodies, I took my D2 out for its maiden voyage yesterday and was presented with a Service Engine Soon light after driving for ~ 5 miles.

Does anyone local to me (I'm on Capitol Hill) have a Hawkeye so I can read the code?

Also, when driving the D2, I felt some sort of surging/driveline slop in gear on steady highway speeds (70 MPH-ish). If an experienced D2 driver/owner could drive it and give me an idea of what it may be, I'd be much obliged as I'm deaf.

I'm looking forward to getting my D2 to 110% and enjoying/driving the crap out of it until the oil pump fails. (yes, its in the dreaded VIN range, but I love it too much to dump it) and replacing it with ToddCo's 5.0 HO engine.

Exactly what lights are on, 3 Amigos or check engine light? If it is just the check engine light go to your local parts store and have the codes read for free.
Did you lube the replacement drive shaft before you installed it, if not, don't drive it any more till you do.
Get back to us with the 4 digit fault code numbers if you want some help.

Mike,

Thank you for your reply.

Its the CEL. If it was the Three Amigos, I'd know where to start.

Yes, driveshaft was greased/lubed prior to reinstallation.

The litigious mentality of DC proper means that my local AutoZone down the street does not read codes. I'll also try to find another AutoZone or whatnot to read the codes but I was under the impression that a Hawkeye would give the LR-specific codes??

Also, when the CEL came on, I pulled over and popped the hood, the front of the engine was VERY hot.

BTW, I also replaced all the cooling system hoses, and the thermostat as well. Water pump will be replaced this week.

I'm in DC but do not have a code reader. I have run into your problem in the past with the DC auto parts store. If you go to the Auto Zone on Mt. Vernon Ave in Alexandria--they will let you use their code reader free of charge.

Thanks!

I went there, and three codes were pulled.

P0306
P0306
P0705

Okay, on RAVE:

P0306 is "excess emissions/catalyst damaging level of misfire". I've got new spark plugs, gapped properly, Magnecor 8MM wires, no leaking or blowby in the spark plug wells, any thoughts? I'm especially perplexed as this code shows up twice.

P0705 is "gear position switch". Is this a common code? What am I looking at with this code?

Is this the notorious XYZ switch?

Battery is also new, so the low battery putting the TCU in limp mode is not the issue.

Pull your number 6 plug, check it for color and moisture, also sniff it, do you smell gas or a sweat coolant smell?

Mike,

#6 plug is dry, still looks new, smells slightly like coolant.

No coolant smell at exhaust. No signs of coolant in crankcase nor oil in expansion tank.

Am I looking at a dropped liner?

I am running into the same issue on my 2004. I had the codes pulled today and got back: P0306 and P0306. Like my fellow DC resident, the front of the engine seemed especially hot and the hood prop rod was almost too hot to touch. I just got home and have not had a chance to pull plug #6. I can try that tomorrow. I have 54k miles and have not replaced the plugs/wires since I have owned it (16 months/12k miles).
