Same question came up when researching parts for HG R&R. Read from several forums found doing a web search. Apparently there's a difference in hole/thread depth between the old/new blocks. Updated kit apparently has the correct longer length fasteners and the one recommended by ARP for the application. Reasonably priced with 20% off coupon, ARP 157-4301 Head Studs w/12-Point Nuts | Autoplicity and/or Lucky8 prices good too.

Most of same threads debate whether it's worth the extra cost when older kits seldom pull the threads out of the aluminum block if lower than recommended torque used.

It is the length of the studs. The 4301 are made for our engines. You risk pulling the threads out of the block. Use a thread cleaner, not a tap, before hand.

I believe it was Zack from Rover North and the guys from Lucky that measure up the two sets not finding any difference in the post I read. But I've wrong before

I read somewhere in my search, the studs did not come high enough. But like you, I have been wrong before also.

Just did a search, and on pirate4x4 forum, the consensus was there were more threads on the block end for less chance of destroying the block threads. Some members pulled the block threads and had to heli-coil. Cheapest I found them was 179.00. I will go with these when the hg have to be replaced.

The Buick by the way fits and you get 8 more studs and are cheaper go figure.
Lucky 8 has the best deal I could find but it doesn't say which ones they are, if there is any difference at all.

Where is the coupon?

Is 12pt the way to go? I use my 5/8th impact socket on them and it is 6 sided. I'm sure I could find another socket.

Okay I have found the 4301's for under 200.00 so that's fine with me. I just want to do the best head gasket job possible. My friend that's going to help me do the head gaskets says to just use the normal LR bolts, but I want the best results.

Get the Fel-Pro MLS head gaskets and use the copper coat gasket spray, keep your temps below 200 and should be your last hg job.

Sorry about the coupon, see it's only off shipping?

12pt sockets are readily available and should already be in your box. 6pt stud nuts another option.


I just want to do the best head gasket job possible.
My thought and paid the higher cost. Liked studs being reusable in the event of having to do HGs again down the road.
