Default bike rack options

I seen this on ebay , I like that its factory, but I have never seen one mounted on a vehicle, nor have I heard pros or cons about it. They won't ship this one to me anyhow, but I'm looking for a good quality bike rack to cary upto 4 bikes.

I would go with a Thule. I sold one like this a couple of years ago, it was a really well built rack.

That said, I realize now that the spare tire is going to be an issue with the Thule, unless you use an extension tube. It looks like the LR Rack you linked to is already extended to clear the spare.

Depending on how many bikes you want to carry, I had the Thule mounted to the tire carrier, and could be removed easily.

You also need to base your rack on the type of bikes you are hauling. There are a lot of full suspension mountain bikes that will not work well with either of the racks listed above. The newer rear hitch racks use a wheel tray much like a roof rack. They are very easy to use and fit all bikes including road bikes, full suspension mountain bikes, and 29" wheeled mountain bikes.

I am also looking at buying a rear bike rack. Does anyone know where the best place to buy the Land Rover receiver hitch adapter? I bought a used 2006 LR3 and it did not come with the vehicle.

There would have been no way that my rack (Thule T2) would have worked. I bought an extension with a riser so I wouldn't lose all of the departure angle if I do some off-roading with the bikes on the back. You'll see the extension brings the mount point flush with the rear-mounted tire now.

I'm not sure if you meant to post on this thread, but very cool defender! I just stumbled across this thread and coincidentally my Yamika spare tire bike rack arrived today, the bolt pattern seems to fit the studs, I'm going to try to install it tomorrow morning and I'll post an update. I don't know about Thule but I've purchased other Yamika racks and the quality is very nice. Trailer hitch racks look bulky to me, I like this solution.

Yah, there is a thread in the Defender forum on the same subject and same title. That as what happens when you’re in a hurry and not fully paying attention.
