Bought a large roof rack, how do i mount it now?
there is Black Betty with her new roof rack (to her anyway)https://scontent-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/...22983302_n.jpg
now how do i secure it? i am thinking of making 6-8 gutter fasteners and weld them on to the rack or weld eye holes and put a locking screw on them. Still in the thinking process, thoughts? |
|
Making a list and checking it twice before i head out, I think I have a good setup in mind.

Nice little rack you got yourself. I'm not sure of the best way to weld on mounts so I'll just post some pictures of mine to try and give you some ideas. What ever you decide I would suggest trying to make the mounts over the A-pillars for strength.

I will take some pictures of the process, i have flat stock and measuring to make an L bracket right now.
This will be test #1 for all intensive purposes haha |

You might have already seen this, but here are a few decent pics of the mounts 2000 Land Rover Discovery Build - Armed For Duty Photo & Image Gallery

Here is what i have so far, six L brackets that are 10 inches long at its longest point and the "L" is 2 inches.
I will add square tubing to lift it 1/4 of an inch all around and then its welding time. https://scontent-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/...16005908_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...15694783_n.jpg getting more help tomorrow so this might get done this weekend, i also might re do the L bars and do 12 inch length then not worry about the spacer. i will drill a hole at the bottom and attach a "C" clamp pics of this tomorrow. |

http://image.fourwheeler.com/f/29240..._roof_rack.jpg i am also beginning to think i want thicker and wider flat stock. |
Good to see you are making progress! As for "thicker stock" on the brackets, that's a big YES if you plan on putting any real weight on the rack.
And for as little as it will cost, you might also want to add another set of brackets at the A Pillar. Good luck! |

I have the rack off the truck right now so it might be hard to tell how it mounts but here are some close ups.

^^^ X2, 4 mounting brackets each side is the way to go :)

Here is where i am at now. 8 L brackets, 11 inches tall and 5 inches in length on the bend.
doing math on the holding bracket and the anchor point. https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...80061524_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...69743532_n.jpg |
I believe you want the brackets under the basket pushing the weight up, rather than on top of the basket holding the weight from going down.

Those are just mock setups to visualize what io am doing and to take measurements. here are the brackets i made, now they arent pretty but they will work. https://scontent-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/...64534518_n.jpg once i have help i will tack weld the feet then align as needed, add another tack weld, remove from truck and prep/weld paint- drill holes and mount. |
how much did you buy that thing for? Just curious.
|
just curious... why did you have the front come out so far over the windshield?
have you had it on the highway yet? what is the noise like? |

Why didn't you just build one similar to the Voyager racks? You'd pay about the same price honestly, just have more labor invested. I just bought nearly all the materials for mine, just need to finish my finals first before I start... I hate finals so much.
Also, those L brackets are going to bend (or more likely to bend) when there is weight on it, if they connect to the rack they way they are pictured (See post # 15, first picture, the two brackets in the rear). |

I built mine and copied the tubing design found on roverparts.com zoom in on pic

I personally like the contour of the Voyager/SD style racks. I mean, the D1/D2's are so easily identified because of contour's of the roof, I wouldn't change that, I think that's a huge part of the Disco's identity. But if you like the square look, to each his own. Just my opinion.

I understand the mounts will be under the rack, if the rack is mounted to the L shaped piece, on the far side, it'll bend unless gusseted. |

Oh hell yeah!! That thing is really coming along and looking good. It looks a lot better than the very first picture you posted. Spray it with a couple coats of black paint, throw a queen mattress up there, and call it the Penthouse Suite. You should have plenty of room up there.
You may already be planning to do this but I would recommend adding a small piece of angle iron in the indicated picture below for strength and you and your buddy should be able to stand up there no problem. Attachment 21053 Even the design you are getting your idea from has a small angle welded in the corner for strength. Attachment 21054 |

I was thinking about making a rack for above my rear tire, like the jeeps but I think the roof rack will be more than enough storage for me.
|
The one I made was for a jeep that goes over spare tire
|
I was talking about more of the rear swing away type tire carriers, with the rack above the tire. If you blew a tire would you have to pull your rear rack out of your hitch to remove the tire?
|
No there is just enough clearance to remove tire without taking rack out
|
Its done!!! for now anyway. doing a highway test tomorrow to work and back.
we put 430 pounds of weight (a buddy and i) and it had no issues holding us up while it was on the ground- i climbed on top once it was mounted and its sold as a rock. pics https://scontent-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/...53145953_n.jpg https://scontent-a-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/...00786989_n.jpg https://scontent-a-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/...83234883_n.jpg https://scontent-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/...47450339_n.jpg |
how is the side to side strength? putting a large amount of weight on there and going around a turn just might be strong enough to break those welds.

One thing you might want to consider is adding some slats of wood over the tubing that makes the bed of the rack. My rack had square tubing 4-5 inches apart and I found it most difficult and uncomfortable to get up on the rack to secure things. I got some 1x3s in treated lumber and ran a 1/3 round router bit over the edges to round them a bit and used hot dipped galvanized carriage bolts to bolt them to the tubing and left 3 inches between each board.
It created a more stable rack and helped distribute any load better as the boards spread the load to adjoining tube supports and it gave me more places to secure my load to. |
