Brake job - how much?
I took the Rover to an independent shop today and they quoted me $750 for a full brake job. All 4 pads and rotors...guess the rotors were pretty shot. Doesn't that seem like a lot, I almost crapped my pants when he told me that.
I've read on here that you can get OEM pads and rotors for around $400-450. I've also read the write up and it seems pretty easy and I already have all the tools I need. So unless he's charging like $150-$200 an hour it's just not adding up. And I know he only charges 40 bucks and hour. So, I'm hoping someone could point me in the right direction, maybe a link to where I can buy rotors and pads. thanks so much! |
i was quoted $850 at midas. i was feeling lazy and not wanting to do it until i got that quote. i'm also going for ebay rotors and pads. [FRNT+RR] 4 ELINE CROSS DRILLED SLOTTED PERFORMANCE BRAKE ROTORS + 8 PADS | eBay $277. they've got good reviews on a few other forums, so i figure i'll give it a shot. i'm also putting on these stainless stell brake lines. Land Rover parts, spares, Land Rover accessories - Search results for stainless steel brake
good luck, jon |
Sorry - I should of added mine is a 2004 Discovery HSE7 with about 73k miles on it.

Just as a reference, I got 4 ceramic Akebono brake pads and 4 EBC rotors for 300 and something dollars. Unfortunately I haven gotten around to installing them. :o

While doing the brake job use two quarts of DOT4 brake fluid and do a full flush of the brake system.

nothing has more mark-up on it that a brake job, (brake jobs are the gravy of the industry) the book probably calls for something crazy like 7-8 hours to do a complete brake job. But that 7-8 hour is also suppossed to rebuild the calipers & flush the system, which is almost never done unless they is an issue.
I bought those R1 Concepts Eline Drilled & Slotted Rotors off ebay they a perfectly fine, i did order them without there pads and used Akebono euro pads. Done right it it take you the better part of 1/2 a day to do it yourself that includes bleeding, I would suggest changing out the hoses while your at it, so you only have to bleed once. even thou yours is a 04 those hoses are still 8-years old. |
Patrick, do your own brakes, as mentioned, use Akebono ceramic pads about $130 in cost, 2 quarts of synthetic DOT4 about $12 and whatever rotors you need , if you need them, better go measure them first.

Rear brakes
My rear brakes started to squeal yesterday. I am not at all mechanical. So i have to take it to our local mechanic. Can you give me a cost estimate to parts and service to repair? Do they have to be Landrover parts? My discovery is now 16 years old. Gordon

I would recommend getting slotted and drilled rotors for the front, and Akebono brake pads, but you can find plenty of kits cheap. A rear brake squeal does not necessarily mean new brakes though. If the pads and rotors are good, you may just need some grease on the back of the pads. |
Here is my list of brake system parts that I installed on my 2001 Disco. This set up has very low brake dust, no squeal and I can stop on a dime:
- Brake master cylinder replacement kit #SJJ100362 from Land Rover Parts and Accesories ($70) - EBC GD Sport Drilled & Slotted Rear Rotors #GD957 from Sakarl Motorsports ($155) pair - EBC GD Sport Drilled & Slotted Front Rotors #GD994 from Sakari Motorsports ($185) pair - Akebono ceramic rear brake pads #ACT493 from Volksgene ($40.44) for 2 sets - Akebono ceramic front brake pads #EUR676 from Aims Autoparts ($71.65) for 2 sets - Braided Stainless Steel Brake Hose Kit for raised suspensions #ABP218L from Atlantic British LTD ($157.95) - 6 Each - Stainless steel brake bleed ports #SB1010S-SS from Speed Bleeder ($65.95) - 4 each - Pentosin Super Dot 4 brake fluid #BFDOT4-L from Pep Boys ($11.19) x 3 liter cans |
