Chasing strange fault

Hey guys help me out if you can. I have a 2000 Land Rover disco 2 that will not turn over. No lights on the dash other then SRS for few seconds. Shifter is locked will not go into gear. Vehicle has power headlights, tail lights, ignition ding etc etc.. I have never had problems or messed with crank sensor on this truck. Only code shown is P1668 but vehicle does not seem to be immobilized when key is put into the ignition the alarm light does not blink at all. I can unlock and lock the vehicle and the alarm works as well as the alarm light on the dash. Any thoughts??

Have you tried unlocking and locking the door with the key? Do that a few times, it should clear that immobilizer

Dennis Stephens Oct 21, 2018 01:28 AM

Yes we tried that the security system activates and deactivates and when we put the key in the ignition nothing. If it was immobilized the blinking light should be active on the dash while the key is in the ignition. It is not there are no lights on the dash at all when key is turned in second position.
A guy on a Facebook told me it may be rotted wires under the fuse box in engine compartment. I am going to diagnose that tomorrow. We already checked all fuses Locked and unlocked the vehicle. I have not checked the crank sensor but my neighbor this being his truck tells me he has never messed with crank sensor.

If it were a CPS fault it would turn over but not start.

You did try clearing the 1668 code right?

If it continues after fault is clear it could be a BCU issue, maybe look for shorts along the wiring harness, maybe the ground? Unplug the connectors from the BCU and inspect for corrosion?

Update:
I have cleared the code but this does not fix the issue. I have checked for corrosion on all wires spent hours looking for open circuit could not find anything. I will add that when the key is in the ignition and in the second position there are no lights on the dash no power to the windows no power to the turn signals no power to the seats. But the head lights, tail lights, wipers, air control, all have power. If it were emobilized the security led would be flashing on the dash with the key in the ignition but it’s not. Key fob has never worked the doors have been locked and unlocked from the outside with the key, security system led is working on the dash when I do this. I’m completely stumped on this issue from what I have read I’m having symptoms of BCU failure but I am very skeptical 🤨 thanks for the time guys if you have anything else to add please do 👍

That’s tough. My BCU went bad last winter causing a no crank, no start intermittent.

If if you have a accent that can program you could source a good BCU and swap them.

Go to your underhood fuse box and have a helper try to start the car

Does the starter solenoid click? Yes - you have a either worn out starter brushes or a locked engine (2nd is unlikely) Starter brushes last about 130k. Recommend a rebuilt starter.

No - Does the starter relay in the fuse box click? Yes - you likely have a bad starter solenoid. You can jumper the lugs on the starter to confirm.

No - pull the starter relay from the fuse box and put a test light/volt meter across the 85 and 86 relay positions (labeled on bottom of relay) check to see if the test light/volt meter lights when trying to start. Yes - you have a bad relay - swap it with another one to test it.

No - you have a wiring problem inside the car with the ignition switch.

Report back after doing this and we can talk you through the next steps.

If you want to try the started, I can send you my old one if you want to pay for shipping, works fine, replaced it by mistake.
