Clock removal
4 Attachment(s)
The clock displays fine on my '03 Discovery, but the familiar green glow background was gone. After asking around it sounded like the bulb just needs replacement.
There is one bulb in the clock unit. On a '03 Discovery, the clock unit consists of the clock display and the door key switch combination. Here's how to remove the unit: (refer to attached pictures too) 1. There are 4 plastic tabs holding the unit in place on the top and bottom. The tabs on the bottom are located approx 1/2" from the edge. The tabs on the tab are located oddly (see pictures). Remember, TOP and BOTTOM and there is nothing on the sides. 2. The best tools to use are old plastic credit cards. Also if you're picky, put blue painter's masking tape around the opening to protect your dashboard. 3. Insert the credit cards SLOWLY in the TOP and BOTTOM of the unit. You may need to CUT one of your credit cards along the long side in half. The objective is to hold down each tab while trying to press down the other tabs one at a time. If you have good feel in your fingers, you may even feel the card hitting the tab and start pressing it down. When all 4 tabs are depressed, slowly slide out the unit. Do NOT force it, you will break the tabs or the plastic on the unit. 4. Disconnect the two wiring harnesses. 5. You will see a black felt tape wrapped around the unit to make it snug. Carefully peel of the tape to expose the single clock bulb. With a small flathead screwdriver, turn the bulb counterclockwise and pull it out. Replace with a new bulb. The bulbs are available from British Atlantic for US $5 plus shipping. 6. To re-install, glue the black felt tape back with contact cement. Wait until dry and then reconnect harnessed and pop the unit in carefully until the tabs latch in place. Al Guison 03 D2 |
Great write up.
I need to go this exact same procedure. You have blazed the trail. Thanks. I would have broken it getting it out. Do you recall the actual number of the bulb? Orsam I am betting. Or course, Atlantic British will buy the buld for .20 and sell it for $5. No one makes more money on parts than these guys. |
Atlantic British part # is YAW000020G Item Desc BULB AND HOLDER-CLOCK
Price $5.95 they shipped me 4 pcs. Parcel post mail was $2.00 |
It would be nice if a LED replacement could be found so it would never have to be replaced again.

I probably need to replace my clock unit altogether. Some numbers/digits' legs/parts are not showing on the display at all.
But at least now I know how to remove it without special tools. Thanks. |
