Clunk in driveline when I hit the accelerator while coasting
I was coasting down the hill into our town and noticed that when I started to a accelarate (just touched the gas to keep momentum) I would elicit a clang/thump in the driveline.
Front driveshaft was completely rebuilt >500miles ago, rear is tight and both are greased. The rubber coupler at the rear diff is also near perfect. Is this normal? Reminds me of a similar noise my old bosses Chevy K1500 made and the TSB fix was some special GM grease on the trans output->driveshaft splines. Not the same setup the LR has. Thoughts? |
A muffled clunk that seems to be coming from the rear is normal, and you will find a few threads about this. It's the sum of all the backlash in the drive line, and it's more proeminent when coasting at a certain speed then reaccelerating after a traffic light has turned green. Of course I am not talking about a clunk of epic proportion, or very metallic in sound, you are the judge of that.

My tcase clunks occasionally... lol. Your probably hearing what ^ said, its common in AWD cars/trucks.

Meh, the Subaru's I've been in all clunked, much quieter than the disco, but clunked nonetheless.

Normal.
do not HIT the accelerator. Bad for MPG. Bad for Driveline. Drive it - like there is an egg on the gas pedal. You'll not hear any clunks. Drive it full throttle or no throttle and you'll get "interesting problems" later. |
Check your Engine & Trans mounts. They're a common failure point in the drive line.
I recently replaced all mine and have damn near eliminated all "thumps" under acceleration and deceleration. |
