Clutch pedal barely moves

Hello,

I have a 97 Disco. A day or two ago the clutch pedal started sticking down closer to the floor. It still works, it just doesn't pop back up to where it used to. Instead of having 3-4 inches of movement, it only has about one now. I figured the fluid may be low. The level of the fluid looked fine, but it was rather dirty looking (think old crankcase oil colored). Is there something else I need to check?

Also, if I go to change out the fluid that's in there, what do I need to replace it with? The RAVE manual lists 3 choices for the "LT230T transfer gearbox". Is that for the transmission fluid or the clutch oil, or are they the same thing? (I checked the reservoir that's right next to the brake fluid reservoir.)

Most(any I know) clutch systems use brake fluid. It's a hydraulic system, just like the brakes.

My old Trooper did just that, and it was the slave cylinder that was bad, but I was also loosing fluid. So it may be the clutch master cyl.

Follow the line from the fluid resivoir, it will run to somewhere down by the transmission, then connect into a cylinder or box. Inspect that for signs of leakage.

After looking at the rave manual, it looks like there's a return spring at the pivot point of the clutch pedal. I would check and see if thats broke. But with fluid that color, I would flush it anyway.

The clutch reservoir takes brake fluid.
The transmission came with automatic transmission fluid in it but they switched to manual transmission fluid and recommend that you use manual transmission fluid.
