Coolant leak at Throttle Body
 

I have an 04 Disco SE that experienced a coolant leak at the throttle body. I went by the dealership to get the repair kit for the throttle body repair (gasket, etc). I started on trying to replace it and ran into a few problems with getting it off. Here is where I'm stuck...

1) Cannot remove hoses due to the clamps. How do I get these off?
2) How do I easily remove that plate on the underside of the throttle body? Apparently it is like a 7/32 socket? Since I can't remove the hoses yet, I cannot get the screws loose. What kind of tool is recommended here?

I consider myself mechanically able, but I just don't want to screw anything up here.

I have not done this repair but lots of others have, sit tight, somebody will chime in before to long.
It is a easy fix normally.

Ive done this before except with the manifold off when I did my head job. If you can't get the clamps off cut the hoses, they are probably dry rotted anyway. Go to the store and get new hoses and clamps. First step is to get those clamps off then it should be much easier. Bend em, twist em, break em, they are easily replaceable. Just don't bend or break the connection on the plate. The plate is held on with two bolts. Use a bit of gasket sealer as well for tight seal.

Same thing happened to my '99 Disco 2 last night as I drove home from our cottage providing a dense halloweenesque fog in my wake:(
It seems the underneath gasget has failed, and my Landy mechanic tells me the throttle body needs replacing as they don't sell the parts! So...there is a kit then?

I will be paying close attention to this thread to learn more on this pesky problem. TIA

Removing the hoses on my 03, just required the use of a screwdriver with a hook on the end almost like an awl but curved. You just hook it on the metal clamp and pull off the stop and should undo.

Just returned from the Landy Dealer with the Kit ( housing, gasget and screws @ $33+ Can) and re & re'd the thing in approx 25 mins. By far one of the easiest tasks I've encountered on this beast yet!

Just happy that my first and worst fears weren't realized ie: Blown intake gasget or worse!

Glad to have this forum to point to the paths of least resistance time and again:) Thanks for the tips!

Hi David,

Been a year since I did mine, so bear with me.

First thing, remove the large intake hose going to the throtle body (makes alot of room with tube removed).

As for the clamps, my memory tells me spring type (i could be wrong, sorry). Grab the clamp with a good pair of needle nose plyers or possibly regular plyers and work the clam over the nipple.

Now grab the hose with plyers as close to the TB as possible and twist the hose till it breaks loose and rotates. Once the hose rotates, it should readily slide off.

Now remove the four screws, clean the surface on the TB and install new parts. A gasket sealer probley wouldn't hurt.

Here is an update. I was able to get it done last night! It was easy once I was able to get the hose clamps off. I did just like what Nick (Jst4Fun) mentioned. It still wasn't easy getting the socket in to get the screws off, but it was doable. Definitely takes some small tools. Now all I gotta do is add coolant!!
