crank sensor problems

hi everyone! I have an 04 Discovery that quit on me today and showed a crank sensor code. I put a sensor in it less than a year ago. I don't recall where I got it from, is there much difference in them? Any ideas why it failed so soon? I can get one from the dealer if need be. Just trying to keep the old thing going, I do travel with it sometimes. Thanks for your help!!

If you can track down where you got it I think Auto Zone warranties em for a good bit. I swapped one out at Auto Zone after Harvey and it took me 5min.

I am sure you would have mentioned this if you noticed it but if the CPS gets caked with grime they can fail early.

Frank4, I haven't pulled this one yet but the first one did have some oil on it. Valve covers leaking and I hope to get to them this spring or early summer.

You may have already found the problem. You can always snug up the valve covers until you get around to changing them. 8mm weird 12 sided bolt or something like that. Not sure what you call it.

I replaced my CPS last week.
A new Duralast CPS #SU5570 is $59 at AutoZone. Even cheaper with a 20% coupon.

What code did you get?

I didn’t get any codes which was weird.

Myrtle died right in the middle of Atlanta traffic last week. The engine would crank but I had no ignition. As I sat in traffic with people cursing at me, I had enough time to check for codes with my Foxwell NT-510. I googled my problem and found that the crank position sensor was the cause.

The CPS finally cooled off from me pouring bottled water on it. I was able to start up the engine again and drive it to a bank parking lot to wait for a tow truck.
