DIY Roof Rack

15 Attachment(s)
I couldn't afford to buy new roof racks ( $1000 + ) nor could I find used ones in my area (Waterloo Ontario Canada). I decided to man up and build my own. Total cost about $200.

Enjoy the photos, I still have to cut the grate to size so I can stand on them comfortably.

5/8in. square steel tubing (wall thickness 1/16in).
1 in. square steel tubing for the two main trusses (1/8in wall thickness).

Looks good

makes me want to learn how to weld.

Jean Filion 12-12-2014 06:52 PM

Thanks guys. For a long time I didn't know how to weld. What I'd do is find people on Kijiji or Craigslist. You'd be amazed how far $40 will go in terms of finding someone to weld together an entire project. I had a guy one time weld a roof rack together for a case of beer, another guy for my old Jeep snorkel. lol. Anyone can cut and bend these together in an afternoon. The bender comes from Home Depot for $65.00 I then returned it because I won't be needing it for many years to come.

Inspiring, I can weld I just don't think I could bend it properly.

Excellent work!

Very nice.

I promise you that you can. Buy a 5 inch conduit bender from Home Depot. You place the arrow on the bender exactly 2 inches further than the distance you want and then bend back towards your measurement. To use the bender, step on the back of it and lift the lever towards you. It's really easy, no joke. Cutting the steel was much harder because I'm not well equipped. I did it with a jig saw :( Need to invest in an angle grinder.

Plans

Hello Folks,

Due to popular demand, I will be compiling plans next weekend and an instruction manual on how to build them step by step :)
