Do 33 inch tires require new axles?

I'm looking at getting 275/70/18's or 265/75/18s for my Discovery and I'm wondering if that will require new axles and brake lines. What about a 275/65/18 or 265/70/18?

Im planning on the 2" terra lift. I would also like to know if the 32ish tires can fit on the stock disco so I could go ahead and get the tires, but only if I have to replace the axles on the 33ish tires b/c I dont want to do that.

Thanks for your help.

you dont require new "axles", but anything of 32" starts to make the driveline the "weak" point.

If I went 33"s I would def have heavy duty shafts.

If the Jeep guys around here can get away with 37s on their stock Dana 35s, I am sure you will be just fine with 33s.

Yeah, I mean it wouldn't hurt to have hd shafts . . . but I don't know if its a MUST.

you can probably run 33's on the street and be ok but I can almost guarantee if you do any serious off-roading you will explode the rear diff cross pin..and then the front cross pin trying to get it out of the woods with fwd only.

russdouble, I have a friend that broke a dana35 axle on pavement. It was a Jeep wrangler on 37's.

Its not a must, just advisable, the problem is we all drive differently both on and especially offroad as some people like to be a bit "gun ho" when offroad, it makes a spectical, but thats when things get broken.

Adding a locker like an ARB would def make the driveline stronger as the diffs as already mentioned are the common "weak point".

Ok a 33 is definitely out because I don't want to replace the axles.

What about a 32.07 or a 32.6? Can I use these and still be "safe"?

Also are 285/65/18's too wide? Will I rub when I lock the wheel?

Anyone know?

sorry for triple post

The difference between those is so negligible that it wont really matter. You can tall and skinny and still be fine since the actual stress may not be as much a shorter wider tire. I have seen guys break HD axles on an obstacle and then someone with large tires and stock axles can walk right through it. So much is how you drive and how much you love the skinny pedal.
