Default Driver's side rear seal

I have a puddle forming under my driver's side rear tire. If the seal is blown, what is the repair like? I'll have to fix it quickly. I depend on this vehicle all the time.

Hi Colorado David,

If it's an oil puddle it's probably the rear hub O ring seal which is # 2 or shaft seal #12 on this diagram Discovery II Hub and Axle Assembly - Rovers North - Classic Land Rover Parts which is a PITA to do and will take a few hours of your time.

One more question. My Discovery II Workshop Manual shows the "O" ring but not the seal. If I'm taking it apart, I'm changing both. I've had trouble getting the RAVE manual to work. Any help is appreciated. I'm about to pull the trigger on the order from Rovers North.

Hi David, it's worth changing both the shaft seal and the O ring as the oil is coming from the diff and the O ring stops the grease from exiting the hub. Therefore the shaft seal and O ring must both be shot for the oil to leak out into the hub and past the O ring. I hope I'm right on this but I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will correct me on it. If you are tearing the hub down in any event change both rather than a revisit later as the additional work involved is minimal.

I'm sure Dusty will 'volunteer' to help you as I'm afraid I can't as I'm old and on a Zimmer frame and cannot get down on my knees

Good luck, post on how you get on with the task.

Okay, I was distracted before. I think I have this figured out. Number 12 is the front seal, number 2 is the only seal on the rear. So, it appears to be a pretty simple "O" ring. Is there a replacement that doesn't have to come by overnight? Can I just go to the auto parts store or the hardware store and find a replacement?

Here's what I think I need to do.

Remove the disc. Unbolt the hub. Pull the hub and the axle shaft. Clean the area of the o-ring. Lubricate the new o-ring with diff oil. Install new o--ring. Insert axle shaft and hub assembly. Bolt it all up and top off the differential. Does that sound right? I've simplified a few steps.
