Dumb Question, Head Bolts wont break lose!

Hello Guys,

Im doing head gaskets on a 96 Disco 1, I got to the heads now but can not get the bolts to losen. If I stand if front of the truck I should be going toward the passenger side witht the breaker bar right? And the bolts have 16mm heads on them? I have tried both metric and standard. I cant get them to budge and am afraid Im going to snap one off!

Thanks

You want to turn the bolt head counter-clockwise.

Righty tighty, lefty loosey.

Turn counter clockwise as stated. Use a tourque wrnech of you have one, you should since you need to torque the heads down to specs anyways, and use slow steady pressure. You can also try to turn it to the right as to tighten the bolt just a little and maybe it will break loose.

If you're turning it to the passenger side then your propably tightening it.

theyre tight, but yeah, lefty loosy. and dont use a torque wrench to break them loose, unless you want to buy a new one. also, make sure you know the proper torque procedure when youre puttin them back on.

I'd suggest you use 6 point impact wrench sockets. I broke 2 regular sockets and rounded off a bolt. Wasn't easy getting that one out! They're tough to break loose. I used a 1/2" breaker bar and most took a lot of torque to break loose.
