Emissions error codes after Head Gasket (lots)
Hey folks,
I just did the head gaskets on my 2004 D2. Everything started up well and the engine runs smooth but I have a smorgesboard of error codes that are present.
Two other things to note (after resetting codes)
I have taken the following actions thus far:
Here are the codes I am getting after messing with things a number of times:
Thanks
I just did the head gaskets on my 2004 D2. Everything started up well and the engine runs smooth but I have a smorgesboard of error codes that are present.
Two other things to note (after resetting codes)
- - While driving, the codes do not reappear. They only reappear once the engine is shut off and appear upon starting the engine.
- - When starting, it takes maybe another second or two of cranking before the engine starts
I have taken the following actions thus far:
- - Reset / driven / reset
- - Removed / inspected / reinstalled MAF and intake
- - Inspected closely all vacuum lines and sensors
Here are the codes I am getting after messing with things a number of times:
- P0134 - 02 Sensor circuit no activity detected bank 1 sensor 1
- P0154 - O2 Banks 2 no activity detected
- Po135 - 02 Sensor heater current bank 1 sensor 1
- P0155 - O2 Heater bank 2 sensor 1
- P0161 - 02 Heater bank 2 sensor 2
- P1451 - Fault code not found
- P0445 - Evap emissions system
- P0102 - Mass air flow current low
- P0340 - Camshaft position sensor current bank 1
- P1482 - Fault code not found
- P0414 - Second air injection system switching valve short circuit
- P0445 - Evaporative purge control valve short circuit
- P0448 - Evaporative emissions system vent short circuit
- P0102 - Mass air flow circuit low
- P1884 - Fault code not found
Thanks

P0414 and a Loose Hose
Hi everyone, I just got an AB engine installed and within the first 500 miles I got the dreaded P0414 code (Second air injection system switching valve short circuit). My mechanic knows and thinks it maybe the solenoid or purge valve (which is plausible). I'm taking it back to the shop soon, but in the mean time I was poking around and noticed something strange when I was checking all the vacuum lines in that one of the hoses coming from the purge (or CVS?) valve going into the manifold literally slides right out of the manifold hole. Looks like its not airtight at all. Does anyone know if there should be a clip/washer/gasket or something else holding it in? It seems that if its sliding in and out so easily that's where the leak could be coming from. I put some pics below. I put a zip tie on there for now to hold it in temporarily to see if the code reappears. Thanks for your help.

Thanks, Richard, good to know. I dug into this a bit more and I found out its called a "Purge Valve Intake Manifold Brass Port Connectory". RAVE doesn't seem to mention it much at all except on page 30-2-18. It looks like this should be quasi permanently fastened to the intake manifold and the hose disconnects from it. I found a picture on ebay of the same connector. The left side should be in the intake if it helps. Thanks!

Just a quick update that even after fixing that inlet valve (as well as the solenoid, purge valve and Bank 1 SAI valve) I kept getting P0414 codes, plus a bunch of misfire codes. I took it to the mechanic who just installed a new AB engine. It turned out to be a clogged catalytic converter. Apparently, the old engine burned so much oil on the drivers side of the engine that it clogged the drivers side catalytic converter. When clogged the exhaust somehow pushes back into the engine because it has nowhere to go (i'm unsure how exactly that happens but that's what I'm told). Once the new ones were installed, along with new downstream O2 sensors (the upstreams were new still so we kept them), all the codes went away, it idles much more smoothly, and I can tell a huge difference in engine performance. I can easily pass cars on the highway now. So, lesson learned that went the engine is swapped, it might be a good idea to also install a new catalytic converter since the old engine may have already damaged it. I'm finally posting this good news update after 1000 miles since the new catalytic converter was installed, which is probably around 50+ engine cycles, and still no codes

I certainly did, thanks for checking. I’ve put another 2k miles on it since I posted that and still no issues. Before my mechanic realized the issue he removed the two O2 sensors before the catalytic converter and the engine instantly calmed down and stopped acting up since the exhaust had a way to exit, at least on the drivers side. After he swapped out the cats he showed the two pipes leading to the cats: the drivers side was clogged, which was the same side I was getting an error code from the SAE check valve. I would have never figured this out on my own but makes sense. I hope this helps!
