Engine knocking after oil change

I changed the oil for the first time and it seems to have developed a top end knock

15w-40 rotella T4 and a K&N HP-2004 filter... Is the filter my issue? should i have used the larger filter like the HP-3001, Mobil M1-301 Wix 51515?

Any ideas what caused this?

Yep it's that darn liquid concrete 15w40 Rotella's fault lol.....

On a serious note I do like using the larger K&N 3001 or Mobil1 M301 oil filter. What oil weight were you using before going to the 15w40 Rotella? I see your up in Canada so I'm not sure what temps you get during the summer, but the LR Owners manual recommends Castrol 10w40 or 10w30. I use the thicker 15w40 Rotella in all my older LR V8's and I've never had any issues for many many many years, but I also live in Texas where it gets extremely hot & humid during the summer months with mild winters (it might drop below 32F once a year).

I've heard of some people with pretty sludged up engines having issues with Rotella as it cleans better and it can loosen some of that up. On my 98 D1 I switched over to it, and I started having an oil light flash on/off sometimes. I replaced the leaky little oil pressure switch and it still did it. I went ahead and drained the oil (less than 500 miles on it) and some goo did come out. I put in some more fresh 15w40 Rotella and changed the filter and I've never had a problem since and that was nearly 4 years ago and 15k later.

I have no idea what was in it before.. this is the first change I've done since owning this particular truck

I'll probably swap out for a mobil filter tomorrow. The knock was immediately after the oil change so I cant imagine the detergents in the oil work at the sludge that quickly.

Temps in the summer here are 80-90F so the 15w will be fine. I'll go lighter when i change it for winter time

Okay so it was at first start up when it knocked? Were you inside the D2 watching the oil light? Did it knock for a few seconds and then go away?

When you changed the oil how did you do it? Did you drain the oil & remove the filter at the same time, then install the filter, and add the oil? Or did you drain the oil, refill the oil, then remove the oil filter? Also when you slapped on the oil filter did you add some oil to the oil filter before installing it?

It "could" have just been a dry start due to no oil in the oil filter. I've always drained the oil, filled the oil, removed the filter, added oil to the filter, and then installed it. Oil light stays on maybe 3-5 and longer than normal and that's it.

It didn't knock when I first changed it, it wasn't until it gets warm. Changed it 100 miles ago and once it get warms it knocks

I drained sump, removed filter, filled new filter with oil and added the new oil.

Okay just wanted to double check

Going to pick up a Mobil M301 right now. On sale too. Will report back if the filter is my problem

Sounds suspiciously like a slipped liner.

Maybe some sludge or varnish dislodged when the old oil drained and is now clogging a lifter.

I'm having the same issue as you! Did the filter fix your problem??

KingKoopa 09-24-2017 10:55 AM

Prob a bad oil pump. Bet the knock goes away and then rears it's ugly head in a couple months.
