Engine Knocking and Engine Flush

I just got my very first Land Rover on Saturday. It's a series 1 Disco with 111,000 miles on it. It's the v84.0.I'm not sure exactly what all the previous owner did, save for the fact thatALMOST all of his scheduled maintenance was done up to 75,000 miles. After that, nothing marked in the book. Also do not know what type of gas he used in it. Now for me, I'm still on my first tank of gas, I'm using 93 octane from Shell.

Okay, so here is the issue, occasionally (one a day, maybe at that) the engine will knock for approximately 15-20 seconds when in idle. I have no tried reving the engine when I hear the knock so I do not know if the speed of the knock increases with the speed of the engine. The engine knocking will go away and will not rear it's head again until sometime the next day. Both times the engine has knocked the engine has been warm, just so you know.

Also, I have a PO420 being thrown. I need to change the cats and o2 sensors. But that will come when I get the money to do that.

This weekend I plan on doing a full engine flush with ATF and switching to Mobil 1 after that. Should I put a new filter on when I'm doing the engine flush, and then another new filter on when I fill it up with new oil?

Please help me put all this together!

Thanks,

Welcome to Land Rover Ownership.

If you are going to use Mobil One use the Mobil One Mileage it will help keep
the leaks from starting.
Grab some spark plugs Champion RN12YC's from Pepboys $1.49 and see if that
helps get rid of the knock and later you can get new wires.

Does it knock when you start it or does it do it just at random?

Use the dirty filter when doing the flush, then use only a K&N 3001 or a Mobil1-301 after wards.
If you really believe the engine is dirty, after the flush, drain the engine and remove the pan, clean the pick up tube and inspect the pan for excess metal filings.
Let us know how this turns out.

Hey, thanks for the input guys. It only knocks at random. Usually when hot. Never on start up, well at least not yet anyway. :-) I think it knocked a little bit on the way home ata red light, but it was so faint I couldn't really tell for sure. It's sporadic and only for 15-20 seconds, then it goes away and doesn't do it again.

I'll try the flush asap, it may be a week or so until I get the funds. The Disco sucked me dry :-). Once I do the flush, I'll let you know. And yeah, thanks for the tip Mike, I'll go get a new seal and drop the oil pan, too. I'll let you guys know what I find. I'm hoping there are no filings.

Have you checked the oil level? Sounds stupid, but if it is low it could knock from oil starvation.

Yeah, I was with a few friends when it first happened and one of them suggested that exact thing. I checked it and it was on the high end mark.

A knock at random when hot sounds like bad gas or low octane or carbon build
up try some RXP for the carbon.

I think you're refering to pinging(pre-ignition or detonation) Engine knock and engine pinging have two distinctive tones.
