engine rear oil seal leakng/oil light
 

just changed the oil on my 03 discovery..looks like the rear engine oil seal is leaking..not much maybe a couple of drips overnight...any product that may help the situation dont fancy rippping it apart right now..and the engine oil light comes on once in a while mainly when i go up a steep incline or around a tight corner...comes on for a second no more...oil pump change?/? 51,000....miles only started when the weather got cold...

I would suggest because it is an 03 that you have someone confirm that your oil pump is still up to pressure and not going into it's death rattle. )3's are know for the oil pump to gernade itself, usually taking the engine with it so get it checked.
As for the laek, do not add anything to the engine oil to slow the leak<"BAD" thing to do. If you are lucky it is the V/C gaskets leaking or the intake manifold gasket dripping down.

As far as the oil leaks go try a Highmileage Oil,
it worked on mine.

i usually start putting 5 w 30 in, in november due to the cold then go with a 15 weight oil the rest of the year..you might have a point with the higher milage oil as it only just started leaking...thanks

You can get Highmileage oil in 5w30 also.

I use 10w40 HMin the summer, and mine had small leaks.

Never got low just a few spots on the back when on trips.

The oil cooler lines leak a little with the HM oil almost nothing, I have new lines
just with the leak almost gone I'm going to wait till it warms up.

You might want to try auto-rx. I have used it in the past to correct seal leaks on my wifes old 96 Outback. Using it now in my 02 Disco. Check out bobistheoilguy.com forums or auto-rx.com, especially the testimonials. My Rear seal leak is almost gone and I am not even half way through the first phase yet.

So, you all want to put a bandaide on a well documented 03 problem with out verifying what is going on. Hell, you could just throw 3 or 4 bottles of Lucas Oil Suppliment in the crank case, turning your oils to jello but bottom line, if the pump is about to gernade won't make any difference other then you will now be looking for an engine also.

Why throw heavy oil or some form of stop leak at an engine that may have a oil pump failing. Go back to the basics, if there is an issue with oil pressure, especially on an 03 check out the pumps performance first then make changes with oil or flush the engine or whatever when you have verified the problem.

I now see the misunderstanding the oils that I talked about are not like STP/Lucas .
Highmileage oils have a additive package to help seals, and we all know about
Land Rover oil seals.

These oils would do nothing to help a oil pump that is going out or hurt the oil pump.

TheHM oilsI have seen are 5w30's , 10w30's & 10w40's.

Oil additives like Lucas/STP are for motors that are worn-out, and if that is-was thecase
a 20w50 or 15w50 oilwould work better.
