Engine tick

when I got my 03 the engine ticked after it was warm as it still had the 195 Tstat
after replacing it with a 180 Tstat I never heard the tick again
I'm assuming the tick was the sleeves going up and down
now that it stopped ticking do you think they are still moving slightly or they just stopped moving ? And thing I should be worried about ?

What else have you done? Anything like change to Rotella 15w40? Did you record the actual before and after thermostat change temps? What were they? I don't think 15 or 20 degrees will stop a slipped liner from moving... Probably something else.

Lifter noise perhaps?

:dunno:

Temps are 194-204 now vs 210-225
i use Castrol

Seems a lot of people had the loose liners when engine is hot. I think that's what I had but now with my lower coolant temps it doesn't tick
I am still worried

Slipped liners are way over publicized.

the tick is normally associated with a cam bearing moving and blocking off the oil port starving the upper end of oil.

as I don’t have the ability to put a cam into the motor and watch all this happen when temps are brought down, I can only guess at why the lower temps stop the tick.

but, I can say I have broken down close to 30 D2 motors and only once found a slipped liner. That was more of a tapping noise than a tick.

all the other tickers had walked cam bearings.

then there is the one with a broken crank, that was like bam bam on crack.

Telephone Richard Turner, Turner Engineering, and ask him or one of his guys, he's a helpful guy and very knowledgeable on Rover engines. IMHO the problem is cured at the moment but will reappear sooner or later. Have you checked for the tick using an engineers stethoscope? it may just be thermal expansion if you're lucky. Does the tick get more rapid with RPM's?

The tick went away if you rev past 2 k. But since I put in the 180 Tstat I have not heard it since

abran 08-01-2018 02:17 PM

that means its from oil pressure. Rev to 2K, oil pressure increases meaning more oil flow to top end. Sounds like cam bearing to me.

But once I installed the Tstat it went away so I'm not sure.
