Fluid Exchange- drive train components
I’d like to do a complete fluid exchange on all of the drive train components of my 2003 Disco. The specs in the owner’s handbook and Rave suggest…
Automatic Gearbox:
ATF Dexron IID or Dextron III.
Transfer box:
Texaco Multi-gear 75W/90R API GL5MTI Fully Synthetic 75W/90R
Axels:
Texaco Multi-gear 75W/90R API GL5MTI Fully Synthetic 75W/90R
General Greasing:
Multipurpose Lithium Base Grease N.L.G.I consistancy No.2
Considering all of the good advice I have received so far…may I please ask for feedback and advice on these procedures? Lubricate CVs etc?
Greatly appreciated,
MWmG

RE: Fluid Exchange- drive train components
I used the Mobil 1 full syn for t-case and diffs. As for tranny, I'd like to know a good one to use myself. I just used theAdvance autodexron III product, but I couldn't find anything better without mail-ordering it. The push-pump I bought at Advance worked great for putting the fluids in. Cut the top off the bottle, stick in the pump and you're good to go. To lube the driveshafts I used valvoline full-synth or something like that. It is the best I have seen at a store, buy your own grease gun if you have to (15$) to use it. The lucas stabilizer is recommended by DiscoMike for the tranny. Be sure to fill the tranny until you get a 2mm bead, then start the truck and cycle the gears, pump some more in, cycle once more, top it off and then tighten up the fill plugreal quick while you're still getting a goodbead. An assistant helps but not necessary.

RE: Fluid Exchange- drive train components
I used RP in everything. Had it in the garage....
I went with 75W140 in the Tcase, and 85W140 in the diffs. Made it a little quieter and I don't notice any lag of any kind.
I even went as far as mixing the grease with some gear oil to make something to lube my swivel joints. I figured LR did, why can't I?

I got RP for my diffs and TC. From what I hear it seems like good stuff and is the same price as M1. I used M1 in my Jeep, soI figured I'd try RP in the Rover. I wasn't really sure what to use in the tranny so I got the Valvoline MaxLife from advanced auto. I'd don't know if there is much of a difference in ATF, but I like what the label said about the additives in it (probably just advertising) and I have used it in other high mileage trannies with success. I thought about syn. ATF, but there aren't very many choices other than mobile 1, so I figured there was a reason for this and that it would be unecessary. Get yourself a hand pump to pump the fluid in. I just changed my tranny fluid without one and it was a messy ordeal.

Thanks Mike for all of the good advice you shared during our phone conversationyesterday afternoon. I ordered the brass replacement plugs as you suggested from https://www.expeditionexchange.com/discovery/this afternoon. Hard to believe the originals are plastic.
Thanks again,
MWmG
