Fuel Pump, can you just replace the pump?

Hi All, on a discovery I, can you just replace the pump motor rather than the entire pump assembly? If so, does anyone have a replacement part number and supplier? I have heard that the pump itself can be replaced with an inexpensive pump from Autozone.....I have a 1999 DI, fuel pump is on its way south but I don't want to have to buy an enitre new fuel pump assembly if I don't need to. As it is, I am having my radiator recored to the tune of about $600. Thanks Phil

I am told that this is the part and that it is available from a number of sources, including Autozone, among others. AutoZone, Airtex E3270.

You got it. I will order the part up on Monday. I figure for the price of a new fuel pump $250 give or take, I might as well give it a roll, the pump should cost about $70 delivered. I was doing some reading on a RR and Classic forum and I guess that this is a fairly common way to do it. Thanks for all of the invaluable info that you all put out on this site! Thanks again. Does anyone know if the pump swap will work with an Advanced Evap. System equiped vehicle? As luck would have it, our truck is equiped with AES. The part is almost twice the price as the non-AES version. Not sure what the difference is. Phil

Why are you replacing the pump, what part has failed?

ljdiscovery 03-15-2009 04:42 PM

Mike, you and Spike diagnosed this for me a few weeks ago. In the morning, the truck would turn over but would not start, felt like it wasn't getting fuel. I turned the key on but did not start the truck tested the fuel pressure at the fuel rail, without the key on, little to now pressure, when the key was turned on for a 20 seconds or so, it pressured up. This has been an ongoing story for the past month or so. The consensus seemed to be that the fuel pump was on its way out. Before it leaves me stranded, I thought that I would beat it to the punch and change out the pump motor, rather than the entire pump assemby, some $380 for the AES version. Thanks Phil
