Genuine Land Rover brake light switch $11.99 at Auto Zone, $68.95 at AB
 

Many of us have learned the hard way that the original DII brake light switch is prone to failure. If it fails you can't shift out of Park (at least not without pulling the shifter surround panel and releasing the shifter manually), and perhaps more importantly you'll have no brake lights. Per RAVE you can "reset" the switch (which I've done on more than one occasion on my truck and on a friend's) but on my friend's truck this month the switch failed again after a few days (twice).

Land Rover now sells an updated, redesigned version that's presumably less prone to failure, but it's been pricey. The old style switch was under $20 at local auto parts stores but the new version is $68.95 at AB and $64 at BPUtah (with the required wiring adapter pigtail).

When my friend's switch failed again yesterday I went shopping online to find a switch locally. I found AutoZone selling the new-style switch for $11.99, including the pigtail. I expected it to be a knockoff but although it was in a Duralast box the switch itself had the Land Rover logo molded into it. (Oddly the pigtail had a VW Audi logo. What?) And the box was stamped "Made in Malta" but the switch itself said "Made in Germany" (I recall).

I've been carrying a spare old-style switch in my truck that I got off a salvage truck for a few bucks, but at $11.99 I'll probably go ahead and replace the switch in my truck with one from Auto Zone and reduce the risk of my son (who now drives the truck) being stranded.

On a related note another forum poster shared this week that AZ has the XYZ switch for under $300. He also notes that AZ often (like weekly) has promos for 20% off for online purchases over $100. That actually brings the price down to something close to what I paid for the first one I bought 9+ years ago instead of the crazy $629.95 price at which AB now lists it.

I guess the moral of the story is that we ought to be checking the national chains for parts we've otherwise been looking to the Rover specialty houses to buy from.

I recently got a genuine LR rotoflex from my local dealership. Their price was $25 less than AB, then they knocked 20% for a military discount (which is very generous). There was no shipping fee unless I wanted overnight shipping, which was $13. After I paid for overnight, shipment was delayed. So they waived the overnight fee and knocked off another $20. I ended up paying $80+tax for a genuine LR rotoflex.

My point is A. the local dealership is definitely worth checking out and/or cultivating a relationship with and B. AB is not cheap.

Great find! Going to be replacing this as preventative maintenance myself since it's so cheap! I bought the EuroParts RotoFlex when I replaced mine and was impressed with the quality of the part. Better than the OEM in my opinion. It looked like it was stamped out of the sidewall of a dumptruck tire with threads running through it instead of just plain rubber. I would've bought the OEM if I could have found that price on it at the time! Can't ever go wrong with OEM...except with the front prop shaft.

My uroparts rotoflex failed after 2 years and around 10k miles. It was almost torn thru in two places. That's why I had to replace it. So keep an eye on it!

Autozone plays the pricing games based upon location. When I chose my local store (Long Island, NY) it shows $28.99. If I change to store to Charlotte, NC it drops to $11.99.
