Grease, Oil and Gunk Cleaner
 

Making a run to the store and wanted to ask what the best product is for cleaning all the oil, grease and gunk off of the parts as I take them out. I am doing my valley gasket today so I want to clean everything up before it goes back in. Just a good all-purpose cleaner that is simple and doesn't require that you rinse the part with water after applying.

Castrol Super Clean works really good. Walmart has it for $7 gallon. Brake cleaner works good, it disolves grease and does not need to be rinsed off, it can remove paint though.

I have a jug of diesel fuel (or kerosene) that I keep a spray bottle full with. It cleans up oil and grease and is very cheap. I use that for the really nasty stuff and then finish it off with a can of brake/parts cleaner to get it clean. Get some tooth brushes and rubber gloves too.

Simple Green works pretty well. Get some wire brushes too for the nooks and cranny's. If you don't have an air compressor, you can pick up some of those keyboard cleaners to blow the crap out of there once you get it loose.

I also use Simple Green at various dilutions depending on what I am working on.. Dollar Store has it cheap. Works real good. Also spray vehicle underneath with it before and after off-roading works well to remove residual mud.

gasoline or diesel works wonders, no smoking.

Don't worry about cleaning the outside of the parts. When fully assembled, just go to your favorite do-it-yourself car wash and power scrub the entire engine using as little degreaser as possible especially on any electrical connections.

I only sprayed my engine once at the car wash and it ran like hell for the next hour, had to stop at a friends house and wait til it cleared up, better make sure all electrical is well sealed and avoid spraying them.:eek:

We are talking DII's here which have a water tight alternator. I power wash my engine all the time. I don't dwell on the wire ends and stay away from the alternator anyways and everything is always fine.
