no gurgle or waterfall, i will have to check radiator

Mechanic says expansion tank is cracked and coolant is leaking from there.Shouldn't the heat still work with just that little bit of fluid missing?

No, the little bit of fluid allows air/steam to rise to the top of the intake manifold and fill up the heater core with vapor. Like on your stove, the pot of pasta at a simmer is warm in the vapor above, and much hotter in the water.
