Anyone have any ballpark on cost to replace a leaking heater core?? on a 2002 disco 2

have a shop do it- not sure how complex a job it would be for me to do it.

Have you had the opportunity to see EXACTLY where the leak is coming from? It's MUCH more likely that the o-ring seals (very common) are leaking, as opposed to the core itself. Is there fluid soaking the floor nearest to the console on both the drivers and passenger side (more wet on the passenger side) accompanied by the sweet smell of coolant? (that's the prototypical sign of failing o rings)


Here is a good writeup on checking the o-ring seals (It's for a range rover, but the procedure is pretty much the same on the Disco, just with less crap in your way. The seals can be changed with aid of a long phillips head screw-driver, and minimal disassembly. You'll basically remove the passenger side foot vent coming from the center console and you'll see where the 2 heater hoses enter and exit the heater plenum. If the seals are what's leaking, there will usually be a bit of white crud around the entry to the plenum. A long philips head is used to disconnect the hose ports and expose the offending O-rings. You plop out the old o-rings and put in the new ones, then rebutton it back up. It'll take about 2 1/2 hours due to the confined spaces - but it's definitely doable yourself. Having a dealer change the rings for ya will run about $400. If it's not just the rings, and is actually the core (unlikely) - then it's a (gasp - sitting down?) $1200+ job since they'll charge you the labor rate for removing the dash (6 hours - 8 labor hours @ minmum).

I just replaced the heater coer on my wifes Volvo and it took me 2 hours and it also has duel zone HVAC so the heater core is in the center of the dash behind the stereo.

Removal of screws
 

I am trying to remove the clamp that holds the pipes. I have taken a picture of it and I cant figure out how to get to the back of that bracket and remove. Has anybody removed them and how. Also, I reviewed the Rave cd and its just states

saddles and remove saddles.

3.

Loosen screws securing coolant pipes to

matrix, release clamps and remove coolant

pipes.

4.

Remove and discard 'O' rings.

5.

Remove heater matrix.

Does anybody know where I can find some guide to remove the dash? I cant seem to find it on the rave cd.

Looks like Im about to tackle this project myself so any information of replacing the core on a D2 would be greatly appreciated.

Heater Core
 

I am in the middle of tearing out my heater core because I needed to remove a mouse nest out of the heater box. If i have one piece of advice to give is that you should not just try to pry off the two aluminum hoses out of the radiator itself. I ruined the fittings on the radiator and ruined the hoses. luckily I do have a parts car so it didnt cost me, but I will now have to do the same thing to my other 2000 disco 2 and swap it onto my 2003. GOOD LUCK to anyone embarking on this project.
