Help with 2003 purchase
I am new to Land Rovers and looking at purchasing an 03. It has 76k. Owner said he has had the power steering replaced and the currently the wipers arent working correctly. Only on high, no intermittent. He is asking 6k but I think I can get it for 4500.
Tell me what I should be looking for
Tell me what I am getting myself into
will this be good for a family DD?
Can it pull my 22' boat weighing 5000lbs(total weight with trailer)
I am also considering an lx450 (80 series toyota)
I really appreciate the help.
Thanks

Based upon these two things, I'd say get the Lexus...

Discoverys are great, but some of that time you would be spending enjoying your boat/family, will instead be spent worrying about/working on/maintaining the Rover (oh, and regularly browsing this forum ).
My $0.02 worth...

The owner manuals are part of the RAVE download, the facory set of manuals. 5500 pounds for a trailer with brakes, 7700 pounds if you are in low range only. 4WD is good for the ramps near me that are exposed when the tide goes out, revealing slippery sea creatures and muck. You can spend time working on the boat and the Rover, both are high maintenance beautiful creatures.

Been around Rovers for years, would never part with mine, but they are expensive D.D.'s to maintain, we tend to call them a Hobby Vehicle cause they are always giving you something to work on.
Unless you love working on vehicles and don't mind some expensive parts check out some of the other vehicles out there.

I would not tow a boat with it.
The transmissions are on the fragile side.
If you can tow the boat at 10 MPH in Low Range - that would be OK.
But, up huge hills on the interstate ..
I bet the truck overheats and the transmission overheats and that's that.
If you are going from a cottage down a cottage road to the lake - that would be OK.
Up major hills. No.

The Disco actually tows pretty good for a mid-size SUV...your not going to find much better unless you go to a full-size truck or get a 2008 Sequoia with the 5.7L ....and the ford expedition or excursion dont count...they're just sitting on a F-250...
The LX450 has a maxium towing capacity of 5,000lbs and the engine power isn't any better than the disco. Never personally been in one or for that matter towed with one but just going with the numbers.
I tow with my disco regularly both summer and winter...boat in the summer (5,000lbs with trailer - 1985 Supra Sunsport) and 4-place snowmobile trailer in the winter (3,000lbs with trailer). Never have had any problems with overheating and i towed with the boat across the country. Highway travel is fine, hills can be a slow... especially driving over the continental divide.
someone has it in there signature and it couldnt be more true:
"Sensible men drive Toyotas. Passionate men drive Land Rovers."
Hard to beat Toyotas reliability....

I havent had any issues and i would say i tow regularly to the maximum limit on the highway up and down hills...since 40k and now im at 90k..no issues.
I do have the 180 stat and installed an oil cooler from a 4.0.
