HELP!! Big white smoke!!

My 2000 disco 127000 miles had a ruff idle and low RPM along with a cyl 1 missfire code maybe some of you remember this post a few months ago!? Well I assumed I just needed some new wires Mike said it could be a hose but I havent had time to look, so yester day I seen just a little white smoke after starting I though it was steam cuz it was cold out? BUT today she is blowing BIG white smoke clouds and its not stopping.
Any ideas what this could be and could this be related????

98roverguy 08-07-2009 06:17 PM

Sounds like your burning water/coolant. If it has a blueish tint it's oil. I'd do a compression test on cylinder #1. Also pressure test the coolant system. Is it heaviest at startup?

Spike555 08-07-2009 06:19 PM

You have a blown head gasket and it is leaking coolant into the #1 cylinder flooding it with coolant so it is misfiring.

IDAHODISCO 08-07-2009 06:19 PM

I would also like to add the smoke smells like when I do my enduction cleaning smell and my oil is a qrt low and my coolant reservoir is empty and I filled it up this sat????

sloppyjoe 08-07-2009 06:25 PM

it is for sure a blown gasket.

the qt low part could just be burning oil,,, id be more concerned about that head gasket

IDAHODISCO 08-07-2009 06:26 PM

Dang how long does that take to change and how hard on a scale of 1-10?

sloppyjoe 08-07-2009 06:34 PM

i have built engines before from ground up.

the trick with this is the fact that it is in the rig. on a bench its always much easier.

lets say you are average on the wrenching side. call it a 7 or 8 for difficulty and a weekend in the garage of wrenching not including getting your head decked as a shop.

figure about 500 bucks

Disco Mike 08-07-2009 06:35 PM

So, the big question, how mechanical are you feeling???
Are you going to try and do this your self?

IDAHODISCO 08-07-2009 06:44 PM

Well Im ok with a wrench but if this will save me $1,650 that I was just quoted than im very good with a wrench!! I just looked they are $159 for the head gaskets set!
How long will this take me?

Spike555 08-07-2009 06:47 PM

It will take you 2-3 days of sun up to sun down work.
A shop can have it in and out in 2.

Disco Mike 08-07-2009 06:47 PM

You really need the head gasket kit, t/stat, new updated upper radiator hose set if not yet replaced, new head bolts and plug wires along with all the normal fluids and filters.
If you have a Rave CD, it will be pretty easy for you.

grussell 08-07-2009 07:07 PM

The work is not that difficult. It just takes alot of time to do it. I just finished doing the job on my 97 2 weeks ago. The key is to have everything you need when you start and be organized - Parts, tools, RAVE manual and this forum. The only extra tools I had to buy were a set of impact sockets and impact extensions. You must have a torque wrench too. My head bolts were very tight, but no problems getting them loose with a 36" breaker bar. I ordered the head gasket kit from Atlantic British and it came with everything I needed to do the job. I also replaced the thermostat, v belt and some of the coolant hoses.

Aaah, this sound very familiar Idaho.

https://landroverforums.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=23406

Same symptoms, Cyl. 1. I just finished the job last weekend, only have a little glitch in to sort out with fuel injection system on Cyl. 4 now. As it was mentioned, three full days, from sunup to sundown. But hey, it's fun. Good luck with your project.

Spike555 08-07-2009 07:20 PM

Make sure that is you replace one coolant hose that you replace them all, they wear out at the same rate because they are the same age and all.
No need to waste coolant by replacing the upper hose and then have the lower one blow and leak all of your coolant onto the road and leave you stranded.

lipadj46 08-07-2009 07:39 PM

I did mine a month ago and just make sure you are super organized put each set of bolts from each part in zip lock bags and label them. Cost me about $600 including parts and some tools I needed an getting the heads machined.

Parts (you are being optimistic you will come across worn out parts along the way or break a few hoses also you need new head bolts):

Thermostat: $20
Headgasket Kit: $160
Cylinder head bolts: $80
Serpentine belt: $32
Hose to heater: $20
Hose from expansion tank: $20

Machinist: $75 (this is critical too don't skip this step)

Tools (I had to buy some for the job):

Metric Impact Socket set (you will break regular sockets)
Wobble extension set (you need this)
Torque wrench
Impact extension set
8mm 12 pointed socket
large breaker bar
long jointed ratchet

Fluids:

6 quarts cheap oil for a flush then 6 quarts good stuff
1 gallon coolant
2 quarts power steering fluid

Total for me was around $600 but like I said I bought some tools that made the job easier.

tweakrover 08-07-2009 09:51 PM

I just went to the shop today they quoted me like $590 labor to replace the head gaskets, not including the resurfacing. and the parts are under $200, so I'd be in and out under $900, probably. how much is 3 days sunup to sundown of your time worth?

IDAHODISCO 08-07-2009 10:38 PM

Wow thanks lipadj46 that was more helpful than you know now I get how much work this would be!! tweakrover hmm $590 sounds pritty good too!!

lipadj46 08-08-2009 08:14 AM

Sounds too good but if you can get them one for under $1000 that's great but remember that is the price quote to get you in the door and you did not add your machinist cost in there the will both need to be planed as aluminum heads get twisted easily. Like I said $200 for parts is a bare minimum, once you get in there there may be a few odds and ends plus fluids that are not cheap in these trucks and need to be budgeted for. The machinist cost, depending where you live this can be cheap or costly (luckily for me I went straight to the source and only got charged $75). A head gasket job is usually a 10 hour job so use that for a ballpark (plus $350 for parts) of what labor your mechanic will charge you.

Well I couldnt find a 8mm Impact socket today what other sizes will I need I dont want to buy a whole set?

Hey will I have to take off the timing cover looks like the timing cover is screwed on to the head?

StevenDiscoII 08-11-2009 05:03 PM

Idaho, if you are talking about the timing chain cover/oil pump, it's attached to the front end of the block. Actually, three of the bolts also secure the bottom part of the water pump. The hexheads are size 12 mm and there is no need for impact wrench to remove them. You will have to remove the front (I believe 4 ea) bolts from the oil pan. Hope this helps.

But do I need to take off the timing chain cover?

StevenDiscoII 08-11-2009 05:40 PM

No, not to remove the heads.

IDAHODISCO 08-11-2009 09:26 PM

Ok guys I know you wont like this question BUT I am moving out of my apt to a house with a garage in 7 days and I realy want to wait but I dont want to spend $$ getting the disco towed to the new house!!
So can I just replace the head gasket on the driver side AKA the bad one and then finish the job in my new garage???
HMMMMMMMMMMMMM

lipadj46 08-11-2009 09:34 PM

I would just wait until you move and do them both at once. You don't want to make all that extra work for yourself believe me.

Well I dont want to over heat or damage the eng and my new house is 23 miles away!
What would the extra work be? Sorry never did one before.

You would have to replace all those nice gaskets you just installed like the upper intake manifold and valley pan gasket not to mention you would have to reinstall your wires. Plus you would have to drain that new coolant you just added and reflush your engine oil. Not to mention the work involved removing all the auxiliary stuff like the serpentine belt, viscous fan, air conditioner, alternator, top engine hose etc. Believe me just be careful as you drive keep the coolant full, if you want buy an ODB-II scanner that reads live data for $80 and keep it hooked up and monitor the exact engine coolant temp. Shoot keep your windows down and the heater blasted.

I know you have not done a head gasket job before but just imagine the entire top half of your engine removed sitting on your garage floor with 70% of the engine compartment components removed too, it is a big job. Head gaskets jobs are a pain in the ass enough believe me don't make it harder and more expensive.

IDAHODISCO 08-11-2009 10:22 PM

Got it I will just take it slow and pray I dont get every red light on the way!
Well my new garage will get broke in nicely and I guess so will I....DAMN
In two weeks I have to put in sprinklers, grass on a .386 of acre, fix my disco, unload my apt + large storage to my house and work full time! This is going to take a lot of Ketel One hehe!
Thanks guys

I guess the on the other hand I could have no job be stuck in this apt and drive a Honda! I have a great life : )

StevenDiscoII 08-11-2009 10:30 PM

Glad you listened to Lipadj46. You do not want to do the job twice.
