Highest Miles on a 4.0

I have a 1999 Disco with 179K on the ticker. Wondering what the life expectance of the motor is before I invest more money into the ride.

Really depends on the motor and how it was treated. Mine has never missed an oil change, has had all of the scheduled services, and has always run premium gas. It has 128k, doesn't burn a drop of oil, and still runs like new.

So who knows, but I expect to go well into 200k.

My 99 has 125k, is very quiet and runs strong.

Increments of 25k miles. That's what I plan to shoot for, and will hopefully re-evaluate then (150k for me).

Dino, take her to 200k.
:D

Well, she runs good as new and has a new set of tires so I might as well burn them down. I'm thinking I can get another 40-50K out of her before anything goes bad since it has a new heads on it anyway. It doesn't smoke or leak at all so why not!!

122k with the original headgaskets! Probably not for much longer, though.:p

At 180,000 plus you should plane on issues showing up. Cam will be pretty warn out, will need a timing chain and gears, a oil pump replacement and valves if they haven't been done yet.

Mike, is it easier to just swap in another used engine with less miles versus an overhaul on the existing one? I recon it would cost the same?

Pretty sure you can do all the stuff mike recommended without even pulling the motor. As far as I'm concerned, if you have good oil pressure and aren't burning oil the bottom end is still good to go.

PS. At 200k I'll probably be looking for another truck. The Jeep was at 208k and had just started blowing a little smoke when you fired it up. Probably needed a valve job. Who knows, if the body is still straight and rust free I might think of a new motor, but a new truck is more likely. Heck, at 128k I think I have already got my money out of it. At 180k it may need all that stuff Mike recommended but I bet it will make it to 200k without it. It will be on borrowed time though.

I've had great luck with cars. I drive them into the ground. My VW was the only exception. Head gasket at 127k. I had a dodge van with 316k on its original never rebuilt 318. It didn't run well bit it did run. Lol

Mike,
I have done everything you sugested in the last 10K. Cost me about $2K to get it all done. Only thing left out is the oil pump. Thinking she is good to go for awhile.
