How to change gear oil and diff oil?

Fellow Rovers...

Will someone please post detailed directions on changing the gear and diff oils?

And do I really need 7 qts?

As far as a weight, I was thinking 80/90W synthetic because I only have medium off-road duties on hunting leases (I'm gearing up for the Oct 17th season start date here in Washington!!!) and snow in the winter.

Any suggestions on brands will be appreciated as well.

Yes you need 7 quarts:

Some people choose a heavier weight like 85W-125 or 85W-145. Here is Urban Panzer's site:

http://www.discovery2.co.uk/

It has how-to's for the front, rear and center diffs.

Thanks lipadj46...I will add a hand pump and thread lock to my shopping list

I should have known to check Panzer's site...

As for brands any major brand will do fine.
A 85w-140 will be quieter than a 80w-90.

And make sure you use synthetic, which is what it came with from the factory.

I'm planning to change the fluids in my diffs and t-case soon, but only have a 3/8" socket set. Am I going to need a 1/2" wrench or breaker bar for this? Also, how necessary is a torque wrench?

Thanks guys! This site's saving me a TON of money in maintenance!

Yes youll need a 1/2 ratchet or breaker bar to remove the plugs. You shouldnt need a torque wrench.

Thanks... I think I'll see if I can get a 1/2 adapter for my 3/8 drive. I assume that should work.

Also, what size O rings will I need? They're only on the filler plugs on the diffs, none on the t-case, right?

Loctite on the diff drain plugs, and both t-case plugs?

Sorry for all the questions... I just don't want to F anything up.

Im not sure on the DII but theres no Orings on any of the plugs on a D1. As far as loctite I hope youre talking about the thread sealer if you use regular loctite youll have a lot of fun trying to get them back out.

There are no o-rings, except on the 2 dif fill plugs which are plastic and may break, so be careful.
Us a ratchet wrench not a breaker bare that won't work on the fill plug on the t/case. Make sure on the t/case, you find the fill plug and remove it before draining it or you may get towed tomorrow when you can't refill it.
Use a 75W/140 for better wear protection.
