how much and long does a head gasket job cost.
My disco (II 1999 136k miles) is leaking about every possible fluid from the engine and engine itself makes horrible noises. My mechanic thinks that the gaskets are bad and would like to replace them. He says he needs to take the engine apart and spend some 25 hours with it and bill me $3K.
Does this sound right? I not mechanically inclined so I just would like to know if this is about right?
Thanks in advance the input.

Sounds like you're being rolled if it's purely HG's. Even an amateur could do them in 25 hours/3 working days without any complications. A pro with all their tools should only take 2 days/16 hours for the same.

If you are doing the front cover gasket the oil pan will need to be dropped to remove the oil pickup.

........
I've been delving deeper into a basic HG swap quote.
$2600 includes oil pan, front cover, HGs.
He will do the job 'labor only' as an option. I supply all parts. He will give no warrantee on the work, and will charge 18 hours @ $95 per hour.
Drow says 12-14, France says 16, an indie garage says 18.
Ha, sounds about right.
Still think I might start looking up torque wrenches.

I agree. Sounds like it's more than a simple, well rehearsed HG job. And in that case. 3k might not be extreme. Although may only be the start, depending on what's found inside. In that case, I think I'd be tempted to start pulling bits off myself.
