Hylosil or RTV- any differences?
Hey everyone,
I am about to start assembly of our engine and was wondering if you guys use Hylosil or RTV and what are the differences. Also with a sump pan gasket are you still using a sealant or just straight gasket, the manual has no mention of a rubber gasket and only Hylosil. Thanks |
hylomar was a factory item, a lot of customers use it. I use RTV without issues.

Hylosil 101 is a Amine curing RTV silicone sealant.

Generally for seals in the oil or cooling system I use a non-setting or semi-setting sealant. This is on the principle that if bits come loose, they won't block passageways in the system. RTV will block passageways. Maybe this is just paranoia..
I've had a great deal of luck with Permatex Form-a-gasket No 2 sealant (black) for oil and cooling systems, although I have found that it works best with a gasket, it doesn't reliably substitute FOR a gasket. |
Thanks for all the replys,
Excellent list as well. Now are you guys using just the rubber sump gasket or gasket with RTV type sealant. Also the timing cover gasket, gasket alone or with sealant? |
