Info Request: Prospective Buyer of Disco II
 

Hey guys,

I am in the market for a Discovery II (between the years of 2002-2004). I was talking to a guy last night that has a 2004 w/130k miles for sale for $6000 firm but he says it has an oil leak and might need some tranny or differential work done? Is that a good price for that vehicle, considering the repair?

Also, he told me to try to avoid, specifically, the 2003 model. Was there something common wrong with that model year (or 2002 or 2004)? Any major issues or common problems with this generation of Disco's? Any "success" stories of flawless ownership? When buying one, are there any signs I should look for that shows either neglect or meticulous care by the previous owner(s), or signs of impeding major problems that are about to occur? Any advice/help is greatly appreciated. I don't want to walk into something that I will regret later on.

if you go thru the sticky, which are the 1st 5 posts. You will find one title something like "so you decided to buy a discovery". That post-it list most of the thing to look for before buy. I believe it also list the VIN # for the 03 with engine problems. What you want is a copy of every repair bill that this guy has to see what has been done and what needs to be done. If he has no history you need to have it inspected by a 3rd party that knows LR.

The price is highly dependent on condition and also where you are. In the Northeast prices can often be as much as several thousand dollars more for the same vehicle when compared to the South or West Coast.

OK, thanks. That particular one was located in Philly (northeast), but I saw a 2003 with 100k that was listed for $7800 in VA (south)....go figure, huh? lol

Sometime used car dealers go through life high on crack I think. There is an 03 on my local Craigslist for nearly $12,000.

I bought my 2003 5 years ago in PA and paid $17000.00 cash for it. It had 33k on it and I was the second owner. Back then Kelly Blue Book said it was worth $24000.00 so I felt I got a good deal. Its been good to me till this past year, you can see my list of repairs that yes I did myself. I think $6000.00 for a Disco with 130k is insane. If it has service records and has been maintained properly then its not a bad deal. At 130k you will have to put money into it if not maintained properly. Even if it was though things wear out and your looking at a money pit in my opinion. I know what I have gone through with my Disco and its not been an easy ride.

Yeah, I hear ya....but these two guys were private owners; '04 w/130k miles for $6000 (in PA)...'03 w/101k miles for $7800 (in VA)....which one would you guys go with?

Thanks for the insight....so for an '02-'04 with, let's say, 90k-130k miles on it......what would be a good price to offer (I'm guessing under $6000.00?)

I just picked up a 2003 w/160K and a 2-inch thick stack of service records for $4700.00, but I am in GA. Runs like a dream.

I think $6K for that disco is way too high considering the repair cost, but I'm a bit of a cheapie about cars.

For that kinda money, look around the southeast and ship it home, you'll get a better deal and not have a car with 8 new england winters and road salt all over it.

I'd buy the 04.
