Key is about to break
Hi Guys. So I have only one key for my 2001 Disco 2. Yesterday the key was shaped like the number 7. I was able to straighten it out but I'm deathly afraid of the key snapping in the ignition. In the past I ordered a new empty key fob that came with a blank. I had that blank copied today but I still need the guts of the fob to make the key work, Right? Is there anyway to circumvent this without paying over $300 dollars at a dealer. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Doug |
just open the old key and transfer the electronic chip from the old key to the new key.

key
Ok thanks. What about duplicating the chip. So I can have two keys. Is that possible?

yes but that's where you're gonna spend a few hundred bucks on the key and another few hundred reprogramming at the dealer |
Your best bet is
1. Buy a new one from Atlantic British or Lucky 8. Then look up the Nanocom rental thread here on this site and rent the Nanocom to program the key. Sometimes these chips can be found at salvage yards or on ebay. Most of the time the ebay ones do not work due to the frequency is for international Land Rovers and the USA used a different frequency. Best to just bite the bullet and get a new one with no issues and program it with a Nanocom. |
Ok great ! Thank you for the response!

You can also have as many regular keys cut as you like at very nominal cost. You don't need the electronics inside the fob key, nor do the keys for the D2 have any RFID chip that needs to be paired with the truck. The ILCO key numbers are RV4 for the all-metal version, and RV4-P for the version with a plastic head.

THANKS! I will give it a try!

You were right on the money that key worked! THANK YOU!

If you run into this again you can just switch the key to a push button. There isn't a chip in the key so it is a very simple process. I have done this twice. Once was with a sensor based unit, the other was passive entry system (like the new cars).
