Key stick in ignition from time to time
 

So, here it is... I have a 2002 D2 and the key is difficult to remove (intermittently). I have read it could be the xyz position from the transmission. However if it it only happens once in a while, could it be something else. Would it be the ignition itself? Or could the key be worn

It is getting progressively worse... lately it has to be fiddled with to remove. Looking for any suggestions on where to start and possible culprits. Thank you.

I find the key position/angle in my 2003 to be a bit weird too. Difficult to insert and remove at times. I'm probably not much help to your problem, but you could try turning the wheel just a bit as it could be a steering lock issue.

Sounds like the lock cylinder is worn, you might try lubing it and see if that helps. An XYZ switch issue would prevent the switch from turning all the way to the off position via the interlock but wouldn't make the key hard to remove once the switch is off.

If you use a lube, use graphite, not anything that's a liquid.

Make sure the light next to the "P" is lit up on the shifter. On my DII it doesn't light up about 50% of the time. I reach over and push the shifter forward to get it to light up and the key comes right out. One of these days, I will look at the XYZ switch.

I had a very bad sticking key. Sometimes would take 30 minutes to get it out after driving. One day I shot a bit of WD40 into the key hole and it has been working perfectly ever since. I do see that others say not to put a liquid lubricant in there but Im just saying what worked for me.

Thank you for all the great advice / experience... so I have figured it out (for the most part). It has to do with the steering wheel lock, if you have the wheel just right - NO PROB - however if it is slightly off, key won't come out. So for now I know what the cause is and will use a work around.
