So, if I change to 20w-50 and it quiets it down, what would that indicate and how long could I drive with that weight oil?

I'll start pulling plug wires this morning and see what I can find there. I'll also break out the long handled tools and see what I can hear.

The parts store that I went to didn't have 20W-50, so I picked up, and just put in 15w-50. The knock didn't really change.

I also pulled off the spark plug wires one at a time and the knock never really changed.

I listened with a long piece of aluminum against as much of the motor as I could reach, and it definitely sounds like it's coming from the bottom. It's loudest on the pan.

Any other thoughts?

 

Take the pan off and inspect for damage before you do real damage.

 

For all that don't have one harbor freight has a mechanics stethoscope for $3.99 (FYI)

 

I'm about an hour away from a Harbor Freight. I talked to a mechanic in town who's got a lot of experience with Rovers, (they also work a lot on exotics) and he said I should be fine to drive it the couple of hours to an indie Rover specialist. Even if I pulled the pan, I wouldn't know what to look for.

 

Well you need to look the cracked oil pump threads and go from there. I know this may seem overwhelming right now but drain the oil and pull the pan and inspect you will either find chunks of metal or a crack somewhere ( more than likely) you will save your self money if you download the "rave" and listen to us.

You are lucky your dropping the oil pan on D II not a D I.

Never assume anything when it comes to your Disco or could could be looking for a new engine.
How about you send me your number and let me walk you thru all all that needs to be checked, and in the mean time, stop driving it.

 

Got the pan off today and there was quite a bit of brass hanging out in the bottom. A few of the bearings moved quite a bit by hand and pulling them off showed that they were worn, but no scoring of the shaft. Looks like I lucked out. We'll see if this remedies the noise completely.

Questions:

Do I just need rod bearings, main bearings and a pan gasket?

What's the best place to order them from... just any local parts store if I want them quickly?

What causes them to go out? Was the oil just not changed quickly enough by the previous owner when the head gaskets gave out?

If you replace it all you will have piece of mind that its done.
There is really no explanation for why but most of these vehicles were leased on there first go around so it seems that alot of them lacked proper maintenance even under warranty on things like fluid changes. Alot of people not all but alot think i am not going to keep this forever so no need to pay more than my lease payment to maintain it.
