lifter noise???????????/
 

I have a 2003 DII. Has 123K miles. When I start it up, engine knocks (similar to back in the 70's when a lifter would hang up) after it warms up noise goes away. I searched this forum and can't find a similar description. Just got through changing all (4) o2 sensors, gas cap, and plugs (wires are next). Runs fine, responsive, gets about 15mpg.

Any ideas? I am at a loss...

Have you checked your Oil Pressure at Cold Idle?

Oil pressure test a good idea, plus use 15W40 Rotella and a quality filter. At cold start, oil is thick, and filter goes to bypass mode, the heavy oil goes around the media. When it warms up, the oil passes thru the media and the bypass valve closes. It may open when pressure changes force it to. You'ld expect about the same PSI at idle and 2500 rpm when cold, on the order of 50 PSI. When warmed up the idle will drop to 10-20ish.

So you should have max oil pressure cold, even at idle.

I'd try a new filter first. Not a Fram. Might also consider a good solvent oil treatment like BG products.

You can listen thru a yard stick to valve covers and get an idea of where noise is. The rocker arms can get clogged up and make noise.

Oh, and these are 1960's lifters.....

I have LR filters and will go get the Rotella. Thanks for the info. This may sound dumb, but how do you check oil pressure? I see by schematic that it is an electronic sensor.

I had to laugh at myself about the 70's remark. I had forgotten that this motor was originally GM!! '63 Tempest if IRC.

With that sort of a knock, I wouldn't drive it much till you can verify the oil pressure cause you can be causing damage every time you cold stat it up.
If you want help on doing the oil pressure test, get back to me.

Unscrew oil pressure switch (it is an on/off sensor that opens at about 7 PSI). Screw in adapter and mechanical test gauge. Test cold idle and revved to 2500, allow engine to warm up full, record idle PSI again and 2500 rpm pressure.

When cold expect idle and 2500 to be approximately the same, 50 PSI or better. When hot, idle should be less, but above 10; in the 20's is possible; hot 2500 should still be 50+. Really low pressure can be filter, oil type, main bearings, rocker arms, etc.

OK. Spent most of the morning reading on this site (FANTASTIC information provided, by the way!!) and here is what I came up with after reading others posts:
1) knock only happens when start up
2) can't hear it from the 20' distance or even closer.
3) engine runs and idles very smoothly
4) No codes on analyzer.
5) has been to Land Rover dealer for multiple repairs, obviously before I found this site, and they have never commented on the noise. In fact, they told me I needed a tune up at $849.00, new gas cap $39.00, (4) O2 sensors, although driver's front only showed up on the scan at $879.00, no mention of noise?????????
Needless to say, I tend to believe what I hear here than there.So, is it still an oil issue? I am on my way to get the Rotella by the way.

I think some lifter noise is common with hydraulic tappets. They sound like a muffled typewriter. I had lifted noise, it sounded like the tappet wasn't getting any oil. The problem was a stripped out head bolt. It was next to the oil hole, from the block to the head, so oil pressure was good at the sensor, but low at the rocker shaft. Mine knocks a little on startup too.

First of all, any sort of an internal engine knock or tick is metal on metal and is wearing something out so don't sit around and wait on this.
Second, the only parts required for a tune up are plugs, an air filter, a can of 44K in the gas tank and new 8 mm silicone wire if you still have the grey factory wires. So, worse case, you will spend around $175 in partrs and your labor. That being the case, when are you going to stop going to the dealer and save $650 by doing it your self.
If you need 02 sensors, only replace the 2 fronts at about $130 in parts.

As for the knock, go do the oil pressure test as recommended to give you a better idea of the noise.
