Long trip

Recently bought a 2003 disco 2. 98k miles on it. P/o recently replaced head gaskets and intake manifold gaskets. I've changed tires, coils, plugs, wires, oil, o2 sensors, front driveshaft (just to be safe), thinking about driving it home from Virginia to Alabama (700+ miles) any recommendations as to what else I should check/ replace. Or if I should even drive it that far. It's not my only vehicle.

Get your self a Ultragauge, monitor your coolant temp.

Have a Bluetooth ob2 reader on my phone that can monitor temp should that be good? Which one would you recommend?

Given the work done, I would do a few hundred mile test runs and if that goes well I would not hesitate 700 miles. I would have a real time OBDII app monitoring the temp regardless.

That’s fine. Just keep your eye on the temps. Replace the thermostat if you have time already. Look at all your coolant components. Hoses, lines, expansion tank. What are your temps now?

The truck has already had the aftermarket thermostat mod so I'm runniy between 185-195

Welcome Cody! I was po, took the truck on a 300 mile shakedown trip less than three weeks before you got it, she should be good to go.

Post pics with the new tires!

Check oil level transfer case. Grease rear shaft, check rotoflex for cracks. Have an eye on engine oil consumption.

Just drive it, it is 15+ years old stuff may happen, but if you worry about it constantly you will never go anywhere.

Just follow the military's simple rules when you stop for more than a few minutes or fuel up :
  • Pop the hood, do a quick visual inspection
  • Check your oil and coolant levels
  • Look at the belt
  • Take look underneath for fluid drips - other than AC run off
  • Take a look at your tires and lug nuts - are all the lug nuts there
  • You have have been on gravel add checking your battery connections, intake hose clamps
300 miles is basically nothing, I can cover nearly 150 to 200 on a busy Sat or Sun.

I owned mine for 3 weeks and went on a 600 mile of road trip covering 2 days. Just covered that check list when I fueled up, in the evening after the Disco had sat for an hour and each morning before heading out.

Never had an issue
