M & S Flashing

Just pulled in the garage and just as I was backing up to park in the garage, the M&S lights started to flash. Also, when looking down on the tranny selector lever, the "R" does not light up, nor does the "D." Everything else lights on the tranny selector lever. I should also point out that the "D" nor "R" lights up on the dash. Landy still drives when engaged in either the "D" or the "R" mode as well as when in the lo/hi position.

-New battery installed December 2012.
-No loose cables on battery.
-Tranny change with filter last week Friday by my trusted Landy mechanic.
-Disco is '03 with 86k miles.

This happened to me once before when I was towing my landy behind my Motorhome with the parking lights on at night. Low battery and charged it up overnight and all was fine. Should I try this method tonight?

Read something about the "xyz" switch, but don't know what it is all about. Also, any correlation between the tranny fluid/filter change last week and the M/S lights illuminating a week later?

Any Jedi masters out there that can help this young Padawan?

....forgot to add if I can still drive the disco with flashing M/S lights.

Odd that you have r light out..
Do you have scan or ultra gauge? If so what is you voltage output? Is your alternator good?
The towing with lights points to battery drain/low volt

I don't think it's related to your fluid change.

I'll have to dig out my records but this happened five years ago to my DII. It ended up being a $350 fix at an independent shop and was related to the shifter mechanism (sorry, don't remember what it was called but will look into it for you - hence the 'Gearshift box repair' note in my signature). It started out slow (a 'what was that?' kind of thing) and I was still able to drive it like that for probably 3 weeks - shutting the Rover off and then starting it back up again after the lights appeared. After 3 weeks though it turned into a major pain in the *** and I wasn't able to get it into drive without really fumbling around in the dark to figure out where D was located.

This probably didn't help much other than to tell you that the problem is in the shifter and that I don't think it has to do with your fluid change...

I'll see if I can find the records for you if you don't get input from anyone else out there.

Yup....I have a scan gauge and I'll report my voltage readings in a few...

Hey Kernow disco....whatever you can dig up for me, much oblig'ed. FWI, couldn't persuade my MRS. to cruise up to Traverse City summer 2013 in our Motorhome. There's a swanky resort up your way (Petsoky) and looks mighty nice. Hearthside Grove is the name of the resort. Also, Mackinaw Island would be a nice place to visit.....even by bike or horse back. Anyway...whatever info you have about the M&S would be helpful.

Ok....reporting back on voltage reading....

fluctuates between 13.8 to 14v with headlights on or off.

Output is good

Crankshaft Position Sensor?

dusty1 01-18-2014 06:30 PM

Xyz seems much more probable
