May buy a 2000 Discovery II
I found a 2000 Discovery II on craigslist with 84k. The asking price is $4000, which is right at the top of our price range. I live in the mountains and need a good 4WD for the icy/snowy winters. I've mostly been looking at Range Rovers but found this Disco II, and my interest was peaked. I don't know what kind of things on the Disco II I should be looking out for. Anything I should know about it? I heard they're pretty reliable but wanted to know if there was anything I should be on the lookout for that could be deal breakers.
Also, I know Ford purchased LR in 2000, so it wasn't until the 2001 models that Ford's fingerprints were on the trucks, right? |

Stay away from the Range Rover unless it is a 95 or old, then they were a great vehicle.
Either will do you right, after some initial maintance. Let us know what you buy. |

Good to know. Any advice about the 2000 Discovery II?

If it's running good and not leaking like a sift then that sounds like a great deal to me.

If the 2000 is sound and has been maintained, that would be my choice based on it's ability.

JB, to answer your questions on things that you need to know.
You MUST use premium gas, the double cardon joint on the front driveshaft must be rebuilt with greasable u-joints. It comes from the factory with non greasable u-joints and when they fail it wipes out the transmission. If you are pro-active it is a $300 repair, if you wait until it fails it is a $7000 repair. The three amigos will be a problem, just do a search on here for them. The air ride suspension if it has it will also be a problem. If the coolant has not been changed every 3 years or 45,000 miles like it is supposed to be you may have to replace the head gaskets. These are good reliable trucks if you take care of them and will get you trough snow no problem. |
